Hey

Looking at a LCD tv with resolution 1280 x 720..

I think it can do a little better link is here:

http://www.viewsonic.com/products/tventertainment/lcdtv/n2750w/

Can you help me understand is 1280x720 look different on a larger monitor? I dont know much bout resolution other then the higher the numbers the more fine the detail ont he screen.. so my question is will 1280 x 720 look more fine on a 27in vs a 17 in LCD?

Also input on your thoughts on the viewsonic above would be cool..

Frank

It will look coarser on a big screen with same or smaller res. 17" LCDs typically have 1280x1024. A 27" at 1280x720 is very coarse because the pixels have to be bigger to be that resolution, whereas on a 17" they have to be small. I'd recommend a higher resolution. Nothing other than 1280x720 or 1920x1080 though if you're viewing HD. If you can't afford 1080, get the 720. If you're viewing 4:3 aspect ratio analog TV, get 1024x768 or 2048x1536. Divide width by height and make sure it equals 4/3 (1.333) for analog or for 16:9 HDTV make sure it comes out to 16/9 (1.777).

It depends on what you are looking to do with the device. There are many factors playing into the sharpness of your screen. For instance, when you play on a 17" monitor, you are probably 1 foot away. Thus, a .25 dot pitch is noticeable if you look for it. Now, with this TV you are looking at, the dot pitch is .5 I believe, twice the size. But will you be 1 foot from it? I hope not.

I have a Dell 30" LCD that does 1280 X 768 and I absolutely love it. In fact, I cannot even stand to be on a 17" monitor anymore. Everything seems so small... I sit about 3 feet from my monitor and play WoW all the time. It looks wonderful.

So the question you have to ask yourself is the following:

1. How far do you plan on sitting from the screen? The farther away the sharper the image for the most part.

2. What do you currently use for a resolution? How far away are you from the monitor?

3. Do some math with the numbers. I did some simple math from taking my 19" CRT at 1024 X 768 and sat close to it and then sat far away. I got an idea on how the picture turned out. I did the math to figure out what a large display with that same resolution would look like, and how far away I would have to be from it to look sharp.

So keep in mind that distance is everything... I can only comment on my display, but I enjoy mine quite a bit. WoW plays wonderfully with everything cranked up at 4X AA and 16X AF with distance viewing maxxed.

Just my opinion... Another suggestion I have for you is to go to a Dell Kiosk, normally found inside malls. They have both their 26" and 30" LCD's in display to view. Take a look at them and make a decision for yourself.
