Resnet pisses me off... (Purdue)

Every hour at 30minutes past, resnet dies. Supposedly it is Purdue interrupting the network in order to interrupt large file transfers. They figure this will eliminate bandwidth issues cause by people running Morpheus/Kazaa/etc. but all those programs resume downloads any ways. So what is the point?

I pay $42.00/month for my DSL service through resnet and every hour I am with out it for anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes. Is this allowed?

Sorry for the rant.

maybe i'm naive, but i gotta think there's an easier way to accomplish their task... perhaps immediate disusering of people foudn with it or whatnot.

Same here. They implemented bandwidth throttling this year, but I guess that wasn't enought for them. It's is really annoying, especially when I am trying to do some homework and need the internet.

hahhaa

i thought no one's Resnet could be worse than mine is at my school, but lol, yours takes the cake. i'd be pissed and calling them every 30 min asking why it keeps disconnecting you. when they tell you, call back 30 min later and ask again and say this is rediculous.

I agree with you minendo. Resnet has gone down the crapper in its attempts to improve QOS. If they want to keep people from using Morpheus, Kazaa, etc. just block the ports. It will improve everything for everyone. Really though, we are paying for a service and we should have the right to expect that it will availble for use almost always. This intermitent thing is BS.

Edit: At least next year I will not have to deal with this as I wil be off campus and no longer on Resnet.

This is exactly the reason why at my school RES.net is a free service. It can be crappy, slow, intermittent, whatever. No one can turn around and say they're not getting something they paid for 🙂
It was always fun every year b/c a few students would get mad and demand a refund when all they bought from us was a NIC and a cable and maybe paid $10 to get it installed.
We're like "You can't have a refund....you didn't pay for the service to begin with."
"What about the $60 I paid in the beginning of the semester?!"
"Well, you're welcome to give us your NIC back...."

It amazes me that at a school with such a good computer/CS reputation, they can have such a crappy internal network.

Not only do they have no idea how to improve performance of resnet, but their mailserver got blacklisted for being an open relay!

I'm glad I live off campus.

On a side note, Univ. of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has an AWESOME dorm network. I could download at over 500k/sec at night, and still in the hundreds during the day. AFAIK all they had to do was restrict students to 500meg/day bandwidh (no speed limits) and they don't have these issues.

The sad thing is that I do live off campus. Purdue and Verizon have a deal going where Verizon supplies the DSL service, but it runs through Resnet. I use it because it is much cheaper than actually using Verizon as my DSL provider. I also use it because it allows me to access resources only available to those that use resnet. That way I don't have to go to a computer lab everytime I need to do homework.

Well I have to wait a few minutes to post this since the network is currently in its down state. I can tell because 70 people just signed off of AIM.

This is a joke.
