Resizing photos for Web

Whats a good software to resize huge digital photographs without loosing too much quality so that I can put it in a website?
Most of our photos are taken with the max resolution of an 8mega pixel camera (i think its 3200x 2400). I tried ACDSee but after doing a 50% reduction the photo looks awfull 🙁

any suggestions are welcome.

Check the "sticky" posts up top, there should be a few options. One is called something like Ifranview. Microsoft also has an XP power toy that does this, just not sure of quality.

ACDsee works just fine. you probably just have some settings incorrect. what exactly did you do? what compression rating did you put?

but if you're looking for free, another vote for irfanview.

if you're looking for free/quick and dirty/almost too dumbed down... microsoft has a power toy that lets you do right click resizing I believe. or at least a very very simple drag and drop windows interface.

I use ACDSee 4.0. All I did was opened the file, click on tools, then resized (CTRL-R), then chosed "Percentage of original" to about 50%. After the resizing the image looks fugly to be placed on the website :Q. Although, the only good thing is that it reduced the file size.

I'll try irfanview if the results are better.

BTW, I tried MSPaint (LOL) and its much worst that ACDSee.

when you're saving as a jpeg, there should be a compression setting as well. the higher the compression, the worse the image will look. see if that setting was way off.

And might I say that 50% of 3200 X 2400 is still a huge photo for a web site.
I'd be getting them down to 600 X 400 at least, if not smaller. (Unless you require high detail)
