resizing *active* ntfs partitions...help!

So my main drive is partitioned into C (OS/Apps), M (Media), and S (storage/backup). Everything was fine in the beginning but I'm an idiot and only made the OS/Apps partition 6gb which QUICKLY ran out of room. I just want to "take" 2-3gb from the M or the S partition and "give" it to my C (windows) partition.

I know partition magic and a lot of the other programs can do this but I won't make this mistake again and I don't want to pay 50-60-70 dollars for something.

I heard that I could use QT Parted from the system rescue cd but I am having trouble using it. I don't think I can resize an "active" partition.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...I can take the "c drive is currently LOW on space" ballon every five minutes. =\

yes, i've heard of that one but I do not think it can resize ntfs partitions...if it can, how should I go about resizing my active windows partition?

thanks

I have used Partition Magic a lot. I expect this to behave the same way.

So, you first backup your data. You should definitely backup your irreplaceable data on CDs or DVDs.

Then, you use this application to reduce the size of your S partition by 3GB

Partition Magic does this without moving the starting point of the partition. So, you will end up with 3GB unallocated space after your S partition.

Then, you move your S partition by 3GB so that the unallocated space ends up between C and S.

Then, you resize C and make it larger by 3GB.

I don't know if this can handle NTFS or not. This is the first time I heard it cannot. But, I never asked!

Honestly..... I agree with Navid, backup backup backup.

I have used partition magic maybe 5 times, the first 1 or 2 it barely worked. the last 2 or 3 were complete failures resulting in formatting.

DO NOT try and let PM do it all in one shot. It has a heart attack. Try one step at a time, but eitherway, goodluck you'll need it.

sigh...it's NEVER as easy as we want it to be huh? =)

Well, I am about to upgrade (in a month or so as soon as that new damn raptor comes out) so I think I will try and stick it out till then.

LESSON LEARNED: Don't be greedy with space! An extra 5-10gb for your OS and Apps is a no brainer.
