I have windows installed on my laptop. It's not feasable for me to do a backup of the system so that I can FDISK the drive. Is there a free program that can safely resize the NTFS partition to make space for a Debian install?

QTParted is available. I use the version available in the Mandrake/Mandriva install routine and it works very well. I have been told that QTParted is also available in the Knoppix CD.

Acronis Disk Director will also work, but this is not free.

cool, Knoppix is how I'm planning on getting Debian. Can I just go through the normal Knoppix installation and it will resize the NTFS partition for me, or do I have to run QTParted from the shell before I install Knoppix?

I believe you will need to manually operate QTParted and manually resize your own partitions. Ubuntu linux has a very good reputation, with many people using it, and it is also based on debian.

Thanks birdpup. I used QTParted and successfully resized my NTFS drive. Now to install Knoppix...
