resizing a dvd using nandub

AFter I rip the dvd and get to the step where you resize in nandub. The video is no longer wide screen its full screen. I"m ripping saving private ryan. I select resize and set the resolution to 720 x 480. This is the full resolution of the movie. Then I goto cropping and look at the movie. The movie is stretched and the black bars on top and bottom are gone already. So now when I encode the image is stretched and looks wierd. The cropping values are all set to zero. No matter what I do I can't get nandub to stop stretching my movie and automatically uliminating the black bars for wide screen. Any ideas hopefully its just some option I've overlooked. I've been following the steps on www.doom9.org. Help please.
