Anyone gonna grab it? Seems like Capcom is testing the "horror" side a bit more after the action gauntlet of RE4-5-6.

I played the first episode last night.

Overall, I thought it was decent. There is definitely some "survival horror" to be found, in that ammo is limited and running past enemies is often a good choice. I also have to give the game credit for it's gameplay - the combat is very tight, very responsive and fluid. It's fast, weapon switching feels like a breeze, the guns have punch to them, and the enemies give nice feedback. Which is funny because combat is one of the biggest things oldschool RE fans complain about in the newer games. It's definitely still an action-oriented game (sorry oldschool players) but an admittedly well-designed one at that.

The enemies actually surprised me with how twitchy and unpredictable they are. One moment, you'll have your sights on a guy who's slowly lumbering toward you, thinking you have all the time in the world, when suddenly he'll sprint at lightening speed and you have a split second to react. I can think of one occassion when there was an enemy who saw me from across the room, he started heading toward me for a second, and then - no lies - he literally FLEW across the room with this massive lunge stance, and pounded me into the ground.

Which is made more interesting by the fact there's pretty much only one enemy design and they all look the same. The repitition in the way they look is unfortunate. But at the same time it makes them that much more unpredictable.

Graphics are pretty nice, better than RE: Revelations 1, and probably even just a little better than RE6. It runs on Capcom's proprietary tried-and-true MTFramework engine so it's well optimized and has a good set of configurable options.

The environments are a bit bland and repetitive, hopefully you go to some more interesting locales in later episodes. The character models look great. Claire is pleasant to look at and her hair looks really nice too. It's worth noting that they actually have a new face model and voice actor for Claire, so she almost looks and sounds like an entirely different person. This is a controversial opinion, but I actually kind of like it. She feels more worn, and more "human" and desexualized than old Claire.

Storyline so far is... meh. The entirety of the first episode is just trying to figure out what the hell's going on. Voice acting is decent, with some cheesy dialog here and there (your AI partner Moira has some particularly cringe-worthy lines). To be fair, it is an RE game though. I'm not sure what else I expected.

Hmm... that's all I can really think of. I wanted to try out Raid mode but unfortunately the game crashes to desktop whenever I try to start a mission, so it looks like I'll have to wait on that one.

Overall I'm looking forward to the next episode. I pre-ordered the game from Nuuvem for $16 I think, so even if it turns out not being that great, at least I didn't lose much. It's cheap.

After reading about it, absolutely not. They're basically cashing in the last decent new RE while seemingly seeing just what they can get away with. Horrible episodic content setup? Check. Micro-transactions? Check. Unfinished game? Check. Performance on the PS4 is horrible, especially for the lackluster graphics. PC performance is ok, but again graphics are very lackluster, they're lackluster compared to last gen consoles even. There's only local co-op in story mode which on PC will be added later, and Raid mode won't be added until the final episode (which knowing Capcom is already finished and "on the disc" they just decided to to episodes...because?).

Revelations was surprisingly decent for a port of a 3DS game. Not spectacular but solid. This just sounds like Capcom is trying to use the goodwill bought from that game to get money, while they also experiment with things (episodic, microtransactions) to see what they can get away with. It's like they learned nothing at all from the criticism of RE6 (and Operation Raccoon City), and I can only imagine what they have in store for the next major RE release.

And pretty much nothing else I've read about it sounds interesting at all. It doesn't look interesting visually, the story, well if you're playing Resident Evil for story at this point then you've got issues.

A friend and I enjoyed playing through Revelations co-op and played Raid mode quite a lot. We also enjoyed RE5 (I have a hunch the people that hate RE5 are people that played it single-player, which not that their complaint isn't valid but it was very intended to be co-op), and again the Raid/Mercenary/whatever mode provided some fun challenge after the main story was finished. He talked me into getting RE6 on sale figuring if nothing else we'd enjoy the non-story mode, but that opening part soured me so much on the game that we haven't actually played it.

So, I'll probably pick it up on sale for $5 after they release all the content for it, but until then, I'm definitely passing on it, and might skip it altogether.

I'm just amazed there's native support for 4k resolution since the last few RE titles I picked up on the PC (revelations and hd remake) only went up to 2560x1600.
