Does the gameplay hold up well after 15 years?

I ask this because despite remakes, the core gameplay of older games just don't age well. This is true for many jRPGs.

I LOVE Chrono Trigger & Final Fantasy 4 & 5. But they are awful to play today because it's so god damn predictable. Same goes for Duke Nukem 3D & HL1- that game was amazingly fun. Even if it was remade perfectly, I couldn't play it because it's just boring by today's standards.

I ask this because I'm interested as I've never played RE- one of the most popular franchise. But I'm afraid I won't enjoy it.

If you've never played a single one, then this would probably be awesome. The problem most people will have is they've played newer ones which are basically run and gun. If you like slower survival horror games, this will be a treat.

Well its a remastered edition of a remake of a 1996 game...so in fact it's really slightly more polished controls over a 19 year old game. However the atmosphere and effects IMO were excellent even in the emulated version I played a few years ago, and this one should be even better. A nobrainer buy for me IMO.

To be fair, the RE GC Remake (which is what this is, just in HD), has full analog controls, a quick turn-around/180 button, and overall far, far better responsiveness than the original PSX game.

The "tank controls" everyone bemoans from yesteryear are gone. Yes, it still has "cinematic cameras" which means you have to pay attention to the positioning of your character on the screen, but I'll take that done well with excellent pacing over the crap fest embarrassments of RE 5-6 and others any day of the week.

Dang this looks like a really good remake (never saw the GC version, although I knew about it).

I didn't get into the series until RE2... that game was just awesome. This one felt a little out of date when I went back to it after RE2, but it was still really good.

Anyone know if they changed the "hold forward to walk forward" to handle the new thumbsticks or is it classic?

Anyone? 🙂

I could google it... but nah. I prefer to up my post count.

I mentioned this in the very first post.

The PC version has been ported over to Capcom's internal MTFramework engine, and the game now includes:

-Support for HD resolutions
-Support for 16:9 aspect ratios (the camera pans on a vertical axis to accommodate widescreen)
-60fps animations
-Touched-up/recreated environments
-Updated character models
-Two different control styles; the classic tank controls, and the more mainstream DMC style controls
-New difficulty levels

Two different control styles; the classic tank controls, and the more mainstream DMC style controls

What does this mean? And for someone who never touched RE, which should I play?

Tank controls mean that "UP" moves the character forward, regardless of their orientation or camera angle. "DOWN" moves them backward, while L/R rotates them in that direction. Just imagine you're driving a tank, hence the name.

Character movement in games utilizing tank controls is based on using the up direction on the Analog Stick or D-Pad to move the character forward. Turning is controlled using the left and right directions and the down direction moves the character backwards.

Tank controls are often found alongside fixed CCTV style camera angles in early 3D third-person games on the Playstation, Sega Saturn and PC when developers were still trying to find ways to control 3D games. Newer games rarely utilize tank controls because gamers find them to be unintuitive.

Not sure about the DMC controls, though.

Jesus Christ, I go to the store page to check the reviews and all you see is people that played the game for a few minutes writing complete nonsense that helps literally nobody in their decision to buy the game. Honestly, this is the main reason I hate steam reviews its just a place for spam and immature people to post nonsense.

first RE game I played was the GC remake of 1. having never really read anything on it, was a very interesting first play through for sure.

Why would you use a mouse for this? Keyboard would work well because everything is designed around digital button presses.

I use a gamepad. It's the best way to play real Resident Evil games.

Anyone figure out how to set a custom resolution? Seems like it only goes up to 2560x1600. When I use GeDeSato and try to force it to render at 3840x2160 it just renders a 1080p image in the top left 1/4 corner of my screen.

Nope! Does anyone know how to fend off a grab from a dog or zombie? I am really new to this. Never played the original, but I did play RE2 on Playstaton. It is really difficult to aim at a zombie. Can we actually aim for the head?

There's no way to really "fend off" an attack, UNLESS you have daggers (not the combat knife). You pick them up throughout the course of the game, and they're displayed in your status menu.

If you have one, and a zombie grabs you, tap left shoulder button (or whatever you have it linked to in your control setup), and your character will draw the dagger and stab it into the zombie's head, giving you enough time to get away (and not take any damage)
This only works with zombies though, so with dogs, you're kinda SOL until they let go.

As far as "aiming" goes, no, sadly. However, if you have the shotgun and wait until the zombie is quite close, then "aim up" and fire, there's a very good chance of blowing the zombie's head off, killing it instantly.
It will occasionally happen at random with the handgun (and magnum) as well, but it's more of a chance/dice roll than anything the player can do to influence it.

So here I thought i was wasting bullets then realized it was part of the game. I actually miss this in RE survival horror or in any action game today. Every Zombie feels like a actual opponent. The shoot em up fest today offers no sense of gratification or challenge.

RE seriously needs to go back to its roots, though I could be one with a minority with 8-16 year olds being in the majority.

I heard they might make a RE2 remastered if there is enough demand. I would like to see it out a new engine completely like Unreal's or Cryotech's but that might stretch that 20 dollar asking mark just a tad.

I guess the RE Revelation games are now the new bread of survival horror of the series. I might check out RE Rev 2 as it looks to be more horror than action/adventure.

I dunno if i'm the only one that thinks this way, but the backgrounds look unsettling. They have a very static grain filter to it, and it's just ugly.

If they do, I hope they put money and do a conversion to a full 3D. At least do the assets (then they could lock the camera and do pre-rendered, which it'd be interesting to see what they could do with that with modern rendering capabilities). Then they'd be able to keep upping that for years (which seems to be what Capcom likes to do, they ported the REs to like every system for like 10-15 years there, and if they do things right they could keep the games going on PC for a long while without needing to put a lot more money into porting them over and over).

Do you mean Crytek?

Revelations 1 was ok. It was enjoyable, but had some issues (super corridor crawl). A friend and I did have fun playing through it co-op though. We also had a lot of fun playing through RE5 co-op. But it was a port of a DS game and it showed (although it wasn't too bad considering really). Revelations 2 I'm not sure about, it looks really odd to me. The main characters look really out of place in the settings, they look like they belong on a TV sitcom not a horror game.

No you're not the only one. The characters also look ill to me. Jill looks like a heroin junky going through withdrawal in most of the screenshots I've seen. It looks really out of place compared with the lighting or to the Gamecube version. The others don't look that much better either.
