"Resident EVII" trailer (and demo)

So the trailer and demo have been released for the next installment in the big daddy of all survival horror franchises.

I've watched the trailer a few times and seen some demo playthroughs, but haven't played it myself yet. Now I'm about as big a fan of the series as you get, and have been with the series since '96 on PS1 (my entire reason for wanting/getting one), and have owned pretty much every entry on release day.
Let's not beat around the bush: The RE series has been sh*t the last couple of numbered iterations. 5 was mediocre at best, and 6 was downright dreadful. And the response from fans echoed this, and it seems Capcom listened.

I'm not entirely sold on the premise of the game based on the little I've seen, but it's at least piqued my interest. RE 6 outright destroyed any semblance of fear and horror and tension and pacing, and it's interesting to see Capcom quite literally do a complete 180 degree U-turn away from that style of game.
My fear is they'll perhaps over compensate for the dumbed-down action shooter feel of the last two games by trying too hard to be an Outlast knockoff, or taking a few too many cues from Silent Hill's (defunct) "P.T."
That was superb, but RE is still at its core a survival horror game with plenty of action, and at its very best (the remake) paces it so superbly as to never allow the player to feel comfortable or terribly confident going forward.
Also not thrilled with the seeming first-person perspective of the demo and trailer, and am hoping that's simply an early tease.
I'm hoping it goes into greater depth about the more "personal" side of the RE universe, and retcons the sh*t out of where they took the story before.
Something more in-depth about a Lisa Trevor style plotline from the remake. Absolutely horrific. In a good way.

Either way, it got my attention. I'd much rather try something like this and have it not be great, then have another Gears of Evil "Shoot the 60 foot tall monster with your minigun from the chopper before the QTE segment!" entry that destroys everything the series and genre is about.

Oh, and I hope whoever chose that song for the trailer is currently unemployed.

Man that trailer was boring, I'm hoping the gameplay videos are better?

Apparently the trailer has little if anything to do with the actual game. It is supposed to be just a "tonal experience"; giving you a feel for the pacing and overall feel of the next game, but not actual gameplay sample.

Much like the oft-compared "P.T" demo was more just an example of the art direction/mood the aborted next Silent Hill game would take.

That's good news to me. I've been more than vociferous about slowing the RE games down and getting some actual tension and atmosphere back, but the trailer/demo gameplay has not been true to old school RE either.
I'm glad they're not revealing too much about story and gameplay yet.

Will be interesting to see what they do. I don't have much hope, but I'm sure I'll play it at some point. Aren't they also doing a remaster of RE2?

I wish they'd make a game out of the little section of RE6 that fully convinced me that its not the RPG stuff, co-op, or the action that is the problem. It was somewhere in the middle when you're on the college campus. Unfortunately its a quite small area, is pretty short, and has some laugh out loud stupid parts (I think it that section of the game begins with the characters driving a car going what appears to be all of 5mph, and then they swerve to miss something and it go into a ridiculous over the top hilariously bad roll).

I'd love a pseudo-open proceduraly generated game set there. Even do co-op, but make it so that you have to share resources, and don't start in the same sections, and have to setup like a safehouse.

Yup Capcom said that the demo is nothing like the real game.

I like it. I actually never really cared for the RE series but this is more my style. But it's probably console only and I sold my PS4. Oh well, here's hoping for Outlast 2.

Been confirmed for PC. Comes to all 3 the same date too. At least for now...

It looked more like Silent Hill (which isn't a bad thing) and also the demo is NOT in the final game.

And the fact that it can be 100% VR is interesting, because from my experience so far, VR horror is MUCH scarier than just playing a game normally.

Hell yes. I'm imagining Eternal Darkness done with VR now.

The teaser demo was boring as hell. The movement was horrendous and the game didn't feel good at all. If it's not going to be in the game or show the game they wasted their time because it was probably the worst thing I've ever played through on my PS4 and it was only like 10minutes.

Well that's a bit extreme...

I think it's pretty clear this is Capcom's attempt to cash in on the P.T. hype and style.
And perhaps a way of communicating to older fans and those who so vociferously complained about the direction of the series, "Hey, we heard you! We're slowing it down and making it more horror themed"

But while not having any relation to the actual game is frustrating, it's more of like place-holder for the overall mood and atmosphere they're going for.

I can appreciate it as an artistic exercise and placeholder, but why it needed to be a "demo" (even though its really not), I don't know.

Thing is, I didn't feel any tension at all during the 10minute play through. I would be more forgiving if I had, PT was pretty frightening and built tension. This was just you walking through a house and they have some dead animals around. I thought to myself, so what.
