Resetting Jailbroken iPhone 4s

So I sold my phone and want to erase it. I tried the erase all settings option but apparently that doesn't work with a jailbroken phone.

According to the TSS Center on Cydia my SHSH has been saved for iOS 5.0.1, 5.0.1r1 and 5.1.1

The phone has been running 5.1.1 and I would like to keep that version on the phone.

edit: I just downloaded redsn0w and trying to re-install that way....not sure exactly what I am doing though 🙁

The only was I was able to successfully erase an Jailbroken iPhone was to put it into DFU mode and restore.

The Erase all settings option just made it hang on the rotating reboot screen.

I think I figured it out. I am using redsn0w - went into extras, restore. I selected the IPSW for iOS 5.1.1 I have saved and the blobs that was downloaded from cydia.

I then get this message.

Is it okay to upgrade the baseband or will that automatically update the phone to iOS 7?

Does installing the latest baseband mean potential problems if you want to install iOS 5.1?

Sorry, I can't help, but I'm wondering if a jailbroken iOS 5.1 iPhone 4S would actually get more money on the used market over a non-jailbroken iOS 7.0 iPhone 4S.

I could see jailbroken iOS 6 commanding more money, but iOS 5 is so old now that a fair number of apps just won't run on it anymore.

Yeah thats what I was getting too. I put it into DFU mode and iTunes wanted to install the latest iOS (7) on it which I don't want to do.

I am in the process of trying to restore with redsn0w but don't want to screw it up. I just have to verify that I want to update the baseband. I don't think by choosing yes it will mess up the iOS version - as it just has to do with the celluar side of the device.

I kept 5 on it for exactly that reason. I figured that most people won't be able to downgrade once they go to 6. I emailed the guy who bought my phone to see what iOS he wants on the phone. I'm hoping he just says 7 so I can update right through iTunes.

I hadn't heard back from the buyer but I need to ship the phone out tomorrow.

I went ahead and clicked yes and got an error message. I can't remember what the message said but I don't think its going to be possible to re-install the OS without going through iTunes/OTA which would mean updating to iOS 7.

That being said I manually removed all of my data, settings, etc from the phone. Is there anything I should be aware of by doing it this way? All of the icloud/app store info was deleted and I logged out. For example, when the slider is turned on for iMessage it prompts you to input an icloud account in.

I also forgot to mention earlier that I tried to wipe the phone using the Find My Phone app and nothing happened. The phone restarted and when it booted back up everything was still on there.

Since you do have your iOS 5 SHSH blobs for the 4S, you're in an interesting position. It should be possible to wipe the phone and reload iOS 5.x. However it isn't easy.

Instructions for iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and iPad 3rd generation restoring from iOS 5.x to 5.x

If your device is on iOS 5.1.1 or 5.0.1 and you'd like to restore it to iOS 5.0.1 or 5.1.1, you may be able to do this if you have SHSH blobs for your current version and your desired version. The exception is if you updated to your current version of iOS 5.x via an Over-The-Air update. See this Dev Team Blog post for detailed information. Also note that using this restore process will update your device's baseband to the latest available baseband version, so you may want to avoid it if you use an unlocking method that depends on your current baseband version.

  • Make sure you have iTunes installed on your computer (you won't use it for this process, but it includes drivers that help your device communicate with your computer).
  • Open the the latest version of redsn0w.
  • Click "Extras", click "Even more", and click "Restore". WARNING: This will erase all data. Back up first.
  • Click "IPSW" and select the IPSW (firmware file) for the version of iOS you want to downgrade or upgrade to. This may be already on your computer, or you can download a copy of the IPSW for your device from Apple via these links.
  • Click "Local" to use saved SHSH blobs on your computer, or click "Remote" to use saved SHSH blobs on Cydia's servers. If one of these options gives you problems, try the other option.
  • Follow redsn0w's instructions.

Keep in mind that if you've already upgraded your device to iOS 6.x, you cannot downgrade it to 5.x, even if you have all the SHSH blobs in the world. (The exception is the iPad 2 - if you have iOS 4.x and 5.x SHSH blobs saved, you can downgrade it from iOS 6.x to 5.x.)

Thanks for the feedback Virge but I had tried that yesterday. After doing those steps I got the message (picture) I posted earlier. I went ahead and clicked YES and it started the process. I got another error message basically saying it couldn't complete the process. I googled it and it had to do with updating the OS OTA rather than using iTunes. I'm guessing that I may have updated from 5.1 to 5.1.1 OTA.

Anyways, I manually deleted everything from the device. I reset all the settings and double checked just to make sure.

D'oh. Yeah, OTA updates will screw the jailbreaker every time.🙁 Sorry man.
