Hello,
I'm thinking of building a new computer at the end of the year and I'm starting my research. I was happy with my last build in 2010 in that I was able to get a motherboard that had SATA 6Gb/s and USB 3.0 and I was able to use it as drives rolled out with these features. So this time around I'm hoping to try to do the same.
Thinking of doing a build with a Z97 or X99, ATX motherboard or maybe even a LGA1151 when skylake comes out
Looking at the new features I'm seeing in motherboards these days I was wondering if I could get some advice on what features I should definitely try to get vs ones that probably won't catch on? I'm leaning towards looking for M.2 and maybe adding on a USB 3.1 pci card later.
Features I'm seeing:
M.2 - These M.2 SSDs seem to cost more than your typical SSD. And current ones seem to only go up to 6Gb/s like a typical SSD. Most mid-level motherboards seem to come with this.
USB 3.1 - Seems interesting now that Macbooks come with only this. Maybe with Apple on board, they will start making more devices for this sooner rather than later. I'm starting to see more boards come with this but usually in a form of a add-on pci card or the higher end new ones do have it in the rear.
SATA Express - seems like the M.2. Which one will most likely catch on? I don't like how I need to use 2 out of the 6 possible slots just to connect 1 to a SATA express though. And I read that they only go up to 2 PCI lanes while M.2 can go up to 4? I see newer boards have this.
dual bios- for safety when flashing bios
Dual-Lan - Now this seems odd to me. My existing internet cable speeds can't max one 1 Lan connection, why two? Is it for in home network moving data around? My 1 Lan connection already seems to strain my NAS when I download from it. Only top of the line boards come with this where they throw everything but the kitchen sink at you.
Thunderbolt 2 - no clue. I only see Thunderbolt if I walk into an Apple store.
