I am doing research on building a computer for my family and I don't want to botch up with the essentials like mobos etc. Could anyone tell me about PC-Chips and ECS (Elitegroup) mobos? What are some frequent problems or troubles with them? I would appreciate any information on this subject...

That's a very small maker. I didn't know they are selling in USA? Sorry, I know, that is not the answer to your question. But: why you are interested in a ECS board?

If you go to Pricewatch, most of the combo sets are ECS or PC-Chips. Looks like good deals, but the motherbaords worry me.

If you don't want to receive alot of complaints on how the computer is stacking up, then I wouldn't use a PC-CHIPS mobo... one word comes to mind: Trash.

Dunno about ECS, but I can only recommend asking around in the Forums in which board to buy.. there should be at least 1 thing in the computer that is not skimped on and that thing is the motherboard.
I wouldn't skimp on anything else either, but skimping on a cheap board is a no-no.. buy an Asus or Tyan or an Intel board for a stable family computer and everyone will be satisfied.

ECS is a quite small chip maker. I dont think the savings you'd make (if any) on purcashing a board like that would be worth the troubles you could run into. I'd recommend going for one of the bigger companies too. Companies like Asus, Iwill, EpoX, etc. generally have alot more money to spend on design, customer support, etc. It'd be worth the increased cost (actually, sometimes you'll find them selling for CHEAPER)

ECS is not a chip maker.
ECS is a big mb maker.
ECS is bought by PC-Chips sometime ago.
PC-Chips mb was crap in the past.
PC-Chips mb is not bad now (the M810LMR).

PC Chips, ECS, Amptron and Alton are all made by the same company. They are all made by the PC Chips company. None of them have ever been very good quality. I'd stay away.
