Rescuing TIVO video from dead TIVO box?

Is it possible to save the video from a dead tivo box (HD is alive) without getting another box?
i.e., can I plug the Tivo drive into a computer and magically save the data that way and then output to DVDR?

What format is Tivo data?

Windows, Linux,?
thanks

It is possible. It's not as simple as a lot of Tivo hacking stuff though simply because the largest, most popular Tivo sites don't allow discussion about video extraction.

May I ask what happened to your Tivo?

i dont know the in's and out's but tivo runs on linux. if you run linux its not to bad--just pop the drive out of the tivo and into the computer, do some decoding and your ready to extract. if you dont run linux, prepare to do so. if you dont want to, you are SOL.

If he's replacing the box with the same model, and it's not a warranty replacement, he could do a drive swap. Then use the commonly available instructions to add (AKA "marry") the new drive to the old one, and have double the storage.

If this isn't the case, try searching the web for "Tivo" and "video extraction". A lot of the stuff that comes up looks pretty involved to me--there seems to be a lot of steps. I'm sure it can be done, but ultimately, it might be decided that it's not worth the time and effort to learn how and get it done.

Greg04,

Is this a series one tivo your talking about? If so you could extract the video like "Thegonagle" said. All you need is a interface to the tivo like a tubonet or X-factor.
