This is sad :(

The Humane Society is obviously not so humane anymore.

They can afford to hire a Publicist but not feed and care for the man's cat for a day until he could find the money to save it from it's quick kill murderers.

Rescue group in crisis mode after cat euthanized

Animal lovers threatened to pull donations to an animal rescue group and the public flooded the agency with scathing comments and calls after a man's cat was euthanized when he couldn't afford its medical care, prompting the Arizona Humane Society to go into damage-control mode Wednesday.

The Arizona Republic published a weekend story about Daniel Dockery and his 9-month-old cat, Scruffy.

Dockery told the Phoenix newspaper that he took Scruffy to a Humane Society center on Dec. 8 because she had a cut from a barbed-wire fence, an injury that he described as non-life-threatening. The agency said it would cost $400 to treat Scruffy, money he didn't have.

The Humane Society cited policy when it declined to accept a credit card over the phone from Dockery's mother in Michigan or to wait for her to wire the money. The staff said if he signed papers surrendering the cat, Scruffy would be treated and put in foster care, he said.

Instead, Scruffy was euthanized several hours later.

Dockery told the Republic that he was devastated.

"Now I've got to think about how I failed that beautiful animal," Dockery said. "I failed her. ... That's so wrong. There was no reason for her not to be treated."

Stacy Pearson, who was hired by the agency specifically to deal with media questions about the cat said Scruffy was put down over a number of reasons, including Dockery's lack of immediate funds, a lack of veterinarians to treat her and what Pearson described as a very serious cut on Scruffy from her abdomen to her knee that went to the muscle.

She said the Arizona Humane Society at the time didn't accept credit card payments over the phone because of possible fraud and can't treat pets with only a promise from owners that they can pay the next day

If Dockery had been able to pay, Scruffy would have been treated at the facility where he brought her, Pearson said

Pearson said the group told Dockery on Tuesday that when he's ready for another pet, he could come in and pick one out, but he declined, telling them: "No thanks."

Not sure what the issue is.

Granted, the man was attached to the cat. And the Humane Society isn't purrfect (,.. what,.. too soon?).

But, they have a policy in place for a reason. And, there are plenty of other cats for him to pick up and care for.

Yes, lets pull our donations and shut them down so thousands of other animals can suffer! Sad, but thats life..

and yes, whats wrong with a publicist when in the end it might help them salvage the situation and keep thier operations running?

He could not afford the care so he walked away and left the cat.

He should have taken the cat to other Vets that may have taken the CC over the phone.

Damn that's cold.

You have obviously not had children or an animal before.

Feel sorry for your soul

An exception for his cat... an exception for the next girl's cat... an exception for someone's dog... and before you know it...

Should have the same policy in place at the hospital

An exception for your wife... an exception for your son... an exception for your neighbors son... and before you know it...

Again, stop with the nonsense that humans are the same as dog/cats/horses.

Sure, no health insurance or payment method, no ER treatment. Doesn't bother me. You want to go down this road?

This.

the #1 question when applying for a Vet program is will keep one out is...

Do animals have the same rights as humans.

if you answer yes. you will get rejected.

It does suck that he was told by surrendering the cat it would be treated.

However, taking my pets to a humane society for veterinary care never crossed my mind. I would take them to a veterinary clinic. In my town, several clinics will let you make payments. My rabbit broke it's leg once, and it was $200 for a cast, and xrays. I was able to pay that off over like 2 months, I had to do a few follow ups at $50 each, and was able to pay it off.

Not saying every place has these policies. And I disagree with them telling the man they would treat the animal and adopt it out, then they euthanize. However, if the Humane Shelter isn't lying about the severity of the cut, then it might have been the best choice. It seems like any not serious cut wouldn't take veterinary care to begin with.

A policy that has earned them the wrath of a dmcwen674 thread, what else?

what i dont understand is, if the human society didnt have vets on hand to treat the cat then why didnt they direct him to a animal clinic??

sounds like the human society thinks they own the animal the second it crosses the threshold and to get your animal treated or given back, you have to pay up or they kill it.

Who brings their pet to the Humane Society to treat them for an injury? The Humane Society is for abandoned pets, I'm not really surprised there was a foul up. You want to treat your animal, bring it a vet, not the place where unwanted pets end up.

Did they tell him they were going to put the cat down as soon as he left?

Article does not say that.

Typical rich response, coulda shoulda woulda

ummm no that is not what is written in the piece. he tried to get the money to the humane society but they declined it.

They declined the CC over the phone.
The funds being wired were not there - they would have had to wait. How long before the funds showed, if they showed at all?

The article states that they put the cat down several hours later.

That indicates that there was time to go to Western Union/Money Gram/etc., get the funds and return to have the surgery done. (30 minutes tops for the funds to be available via CC)

So, in the end, the guy abandoned his cat with them.
They decided to not treat it for it's injuries.

The cost factor was they could do more good with the funds for other animals.

Ohhhh I bet this thread makes a huge difference in the Humane Society's policy and operation. Just like all your threads/posts railing on gas prices, being carded for Balsamic vinegar, and upcoming revolution.

You laugh, but just wait until you or your family are harmed by balsamic vinegar and then we will see how you change your tune...

(note, I have no idea what this balsamic vinegar thing is about)

they offer discount veterinary care for those that can't afford otherwise, such as Dockery. I have used them in my younger days.
