What a pitb, I found out today that Kaspersky's Rescue disk goes into an endless loop when it encounters certain files during scanning. Googling said the product was old and due for a change this year. And it didn't run properly at startup with the default settings, I had to use an alternative graphics mode.
Bitdefender had crashed with file not found errors at startup. Both Kaspersky/Bitdefender had no issues running on an older laptop except for the Kaspersky endless loop issue so maybe newer hardware have problems with rescue disks.
