Resale values and reliabilty: Civic vs Corolla vs 3

From reviews every motoring journo seems to love the 3, but I've heard plenty of complaints about brakes, fuel consumption and aircon on here which make me a bit wary.

How do the resale values stack up?

3's fuel economy (especially the 2.3) is very lousy from my two friends who have one.

Then again, I don't care for the center dash setup in the Civic either. But out of the three, I still like the Civic best if I really had to choose. If I had my way, I'd move up to an Accord as it's roomier and offers a better ride for long trips.

Check out kbb.com for exact resale values.

Without looking:

Civic will probably top resale due to its popularity with younger buyers, who are the buyers most likely to be looking for a cheap used car. Corolla might top reliability.

The resale of the Civic and 3 are the best and the Rolla last
the 3 and the Civic are the most fun to drive
The Rolla has the best fuel economy, possibly best mechanical reliability
The rolla is the ugliest, style for the other two is subjective

No, the corolla has better resale value than the 3.

Anyways, the complaints I have with my 3 is the gas and the brakes. The brakes are very noisy at low speeds (It sounds like rotors need to be replaced, but all is fine when they check it).

According to yahoo total cost to own, over 5 years, the civic depreciates the least while the Honda does the most. It's about a $1000 difference

http://autos.yahoo.com/mazda_m...ng_value_4_door-price/
http://autos.yahoo.com/toyota_...lla_le_5_spd_mt-price/
http://autos.yahoo.com/honda_c...dan_lx_5_spd_mt-price/

Estimates put the Honda depreciates the most, the Mazda the least. The Toyota depreciates ~$100 more over 5 years than the 3 and The Honda depreciates almost $1000 more.

As far as estimated total ownership, the Toyota edges out the Honda $.44 to $.45 per mile while the Mazda3 lags behind at $.47.

In the parking lot where I work there are 6 or 7 Corollas
and one mazda 3
Supply and demand
I'd drive a 3 over a rolla anyday

Well if you're going on about that, there's more supply because there's more corollas, and in effect, more demand. It's been the best selling car in the world for years and years now. Theres 30+million Corollas, I'd be very, very suprised if there were 3 million Mazda 3s. Mazda only sells 200k cars a year in America. The Camry sells more than 2x, maybe 2.5x that many in a good year in America.

For average resale value, 3 can NEVER be closer to Civic or Corolla, period. Resale value is mostly defined by reliability and brand image, and Mazda simply isn't up to the level of Honda or Toyota. And also consider that the popularity of 3 just grew up pretty recently, like 3 years ago. Before that everyone was like "Who the hell is Mazda" and "Are they any good?" (Whole Mazda brand, besides Miata, for that matter).

Of course it may vary by location, but we are talking about average here.

Resale value of the Civic is best. Not sure how the 3 and Corolla compare in this area. Honda resale values are higher as they originally have far fewer incentives and also, virtually no fleet sales.

Also, take a look at a Mazda dealerships during the whole last month. They still have a bunch of 3's from the start of that month (they are even advertising the 3 auto sport HB for 16.7k in my area). Toyota dealerships rarely have inventory for more than a month. Infact, the 09's are even selling like crazy now. Yes, there are a bunch of rebates for the 08 Corolla, but most dealerships know they can get rid of them without even giving the rebates to the consumer.

Right I'm talking about Canada where Mazda has always been popular, ergo your 'regional difference' and thats the point if you want a USED 3 the resale has it high because the demand is highcause I thought we were talking resale?

Mazda had trouble meeting the demand those first few years.
My buddy sold his first 3 for more than he paid for it and bought the next model up.
There may be lots of new ones on the lot but that isn't the used market
I looked on On Autotrader there were only 3, 3's from 2004 all priced higher than Corollas in my area.
There were a dozen + Corollas for sale before I got tired of looking for them, not to mention Vibes and Matrixes. Supply and demand of used vehicles.

I bought a new Mazda3 a couple years ago because the resale on 2 year old models was too high to make it worth buying used.
Not sure what you complains you heard about the brakes, but to me the brakes on the Mazda3 feel like they belong on a car costing twice as much.
Fuel economy isn't all that great, but it's OK considering it's more performance oriented than Civic and Corolla. I get about 30mpg mixed driving.

😕 Que?

😉 😛

I just hit 80k on my 2005 Mazda3.

Short of some fuel valve issues around 70k miles, its been fine. My biggest complaint is the road noise, its horrible on the highway.

I can speak first hand about the Civic.

My 2006 Civic LX w/ Honda Factory Performance Rims
with torn interior
with no amplifiers/speakers/wiring for radio (factory radio intact)
with busted door panel
with broken drivers side mirror
with dented drivers door
and 14,600 miles

I owed 15,300 and got $14,600. Keep in mind that I paid $1k for extra warranty, and owned the car for 17 months.

I got to say the car really kept it's value. 🙂 If I didn't buy the warranty, I would have profited with a car that was in sorry shape. lol

Honda = Super Value Holder.
