Resale steadily declining for 8800 GTX

The GTX has held it's resale value fairly well, even thru launch of the 8800 GT. But as awareness of new product increases and supply improves, GTX value is dropping fast.

A couple weeks ago used a GTX would pull $400+. They're dipping into $300's now. Expect them to settle around the price of a G92 GTS.

It's a great time to buy a card that will still kick butt, but bad time to sell one. With that in mind, one should question what performance gains R680 and GX2 will offer over current and last gen product. I'll need to see an 80% or better boost before I sell my GTX.

You're playing The Witcher right now from what I've read. I've played it with both cards. With the GTX I had all settings maxed, vSync on, 4xAA 16xAF in-game, HQ driver settings. Same settings with GTS and it's slooow-motion. (2xAA max in-game for the GTS)

A GTX beats a G92 GTS performance wise. A GTX costing about the same or a little more than a GTS is a good deal IMO.

That game you're playing, The Witcher. I've played it with both cards. With the GTX I had all settings maxed, 4xAA 16xAF in-game, high quality driver settings. The GTS, choppy and unplayable at same settings. My bad, GTS=2xAA max in-game.

A thread could go on and on about the pros and cons. In the end, the GTX beats a G92 GTS performance wise. A GTX costing about the same or a little more than a GTS is a good deal IMO.

Just to add, it's the GTX's increased memory bandwidth that helps it outperform the G92GTS.

I love my card. I'm glad I bought it, and glad the price held out as long as it did. In comparison, when I bought my 6800GT to play Doom 3, it was outdated in a few months by the MONSTER 7800GTX, and more reasonable 7800GT.

If you have an 8800GTX, I don't see a point in getting rid of it, unless you MUST have the best of the best. At this point, there's still very little that beats it. Even though the cards are newer, the performanace is either below the 8800GTX, or still not revolutionary. The 9800GTX / 8900GTX / 9900GTX or whatever is coming next will finally put it in its place in history, but it's been how long?

Plus, with this card being such a performance jump over previous generations, and HUGE, I will still proudly keep it on a shelf somewhere. Maybe ten years from now, I'll find it hanging around somewhere and remember the good times. :p

It's too bad i'll never do SLI.

Those prices are pretty decent.

For now though, i'll stick with my 8800 GTX...likely for quite a bit longer too, since i won't be selling it till a worthy replacement arrives, & the 9800GX2 isn't it.
Which means lots time before this 8800 GTX goes bye bye.

Sold mine too... bought a GTS 512MB instead and banked $50+ in the process. The 8800GTX and Ultra are still the performance kings of the hill, but NVIDIA has successfully shifted the perception of the market that G92 based cards are superior. So, it was time to get rid the 8800GTX before it lost too much value.

I read this thread with some interest since I own a 640MB 8800GTS (BFG O.C.). I have owned this card for quite a while now, and don't typically upgrade to bleeding edge stuff. As a matter of fact, my 8800GTS is in a S754 rig with 2GB of memory and WinXP Pro. I had my 3400+ Venice Overclocked to 2750Mhz rock solid, before backing down to 2650 since nothing I was doing was stressing my system.

I certainly see that things are changing rapidly once again. I know that I won't be playing Crysis or some of the other new games with this rig and all settings cranked to Max. Since I was playing BF2 @ 16x12 with everything maxed for years and now am playing COD4 @ 16x12 with everything maxed, I don't see the need to 'upgrade' at the moment.

Don't get me wrong, I know that most systems here could crush mine. I just wanted to know why I should be considering getting rid of my 'old' stuff? Is it a case of 'whatever works for you'? Is a FPS of epic proportions coming down the pike? Would COD4 look sooo much better if I ran it on Vista (sorry, I could bring myself to say 'upgraded-to-Vista') with DX10?

Thanks in advance for any information you can give. I am honestly interested in learning.
