i'm looking to upgrade my old 2500barton system, and i heard somewhere with the 939 you need a adaptor or some such thing to connect the power supply to the motherboard, is this true, or is there anything different between installing a 754 or a 939 system?

Some newer motherboards have 24-pin ATX connections, yes. I believe I remember reading that you can usually plug a 20-pin connector into these without problems, but definitely wait until someone either agrees or disagrees with me - I do not know for sure. There are still some 939 boards with 20-pin ATX connectors though, the ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 is one that comes to mind.

Last year's socket 939 motherboards that support AGP all support the 20 pin power supplies. These are built on the Nividia nForce3 and Via K8T800 chipsets. The newer nForce4 motherboards that support PCI Express are the ones with the 24 pin power plug and the adaptor requirement.

So to answer your question, yes, there are socket 939 motherboards available that conform to the older 20 pin power standard but, you'll probably have to stick with AGP video for that.

Icepik explained it perfectly.

New powersupplies will have 24pin connectors, if you plan on making the move to a nforce4 board I would recommend a new power supply to go with it.

You can find the adapters on newegg, but you don't really need one. The nforce4 boards work fine with a 20pin PS and no adapter
