I'd like to build a small ftp server... I think I'll slap a 120gb I already have in it... so no cost for HD there, but what other specs would I need? Maybe like 300 mhz and win2k for stability? no sound needed obviously, just something to hold files and be turned on / connected all the time.

Memory would be the biggest concern here. CPU isn't so much a big deal, depending on how many users you plan on having (i.e. a little or alot) If it's just a small time ftp server then really any processor will do.

W2K will run OK with 128 MB if you're only using the box for FTP. A P2/celeron 233-300 MHz CPU should be fine.

If you also want to use it for a music jukebox fileserver that's still enough CPU and maybe enough RAM. If you also want it to play music (hook it to your stereo) then you'd probably want around 400 MHz and 256 MB RAM.

256MB of memory is so cheap these days, $20-$30 at most for some regular stuff, you might as well just spend the little bit extra if you plan on running Win2k. It's much happier with 256MB than 128MB.

If it is going to be a dedicated server, think about a *nix solution. You can it up with out X or any windows managers and it will run faster and consume alot less system resources than Win2k especially if you are on a low budget, then you don't have to worry about a Win2k license.

Yes, as this will also have an impact on your server setup.

That, in my opinion, are the first considerations, closely followed by budget ;)

I'd just slap in another 64mb of ram if you raelly want to save money since somewhere between 128 and 192 in the sweet spot. I think the biggest performance jump in Win2kPro is between 128 and 192mb of ram.

If it's just a home ftp server with a few connections per day, even an old 486 with 32 megs of ram would be sufficient.

I'll say more or less the same as everyone else but add the word STABLE. Just about any combo will be fine as long as it is dead on rock solid. For an FTP server I would rather have a solid P100 system than a generic P2-400.

If you plan to go with Win2K, spend $20 on 128 megs of RAM. Even 64 megs would work but it's worth the $20 to have 128 installed, if for no other reason that to speed up the install and boot time.
