I've been considering a new build lately and I have it (near) exactly how I want it but I'd appreciate more opinions. I'll be using it mainly for Photoshop, AfterEffects, Maya, and gaming. The build will be neatly resting in my Thermaltake Shark and is as follows:
Parts to buy
=======================
Samsung Spinpoint T166 500GB
---Or Western Digital Caviar SE!6 500GB, depends on price at purchase. Leaning towards Spinpoint, however.
2x 2GB set of G.Skill DDR2 800
---I don't really have anything competing for this slot but suggestions are welcome. I might add a second slot later on down the line but that really depends on how demanding I see my work becoming or how my system is running.
EVGA 8800GT
---If I'm feeling sly I can see myself maybe jumping on a GTS at the last second. I don't think I'll be doing this though, I just don't see the point in going over the GT at the moment. The 9000 series is right around the corner but my third eye is telling me it won't be impressive.
IP35 Pro
---I know I want to overclock down the line, just a little after I get over the newness of the parts. I'm willing (or looking to, rather) take this down to an IP35-E but I just noticed they're off Newegg. ; ; So, it looks like it's either the DS3L, IP35 Pro, or Neo2-FR. Opinions are welcome. : ) I'm not really interesting in SLI, lol3xSLI, or miniSLI (that 16/4 or 8/8 stuff), so those are out. eSATA is also probably going to be ignored pretty heavily as well. I just need a minimum of two available PCI slots and four memory slots if anyone wants to suggest anything else.
Q6600
---Might get a E2180 in it's place but I'm not too keen on the idea. The only reason I'd want to do that is to have a cheap processor immediately and upgrade to a 9300/9450 when they're out. I don't think I'll buy the first generation though, so I don't really know how long I'd be with the E2180 and I'm sure Q6600 to Q9300/9450 won't be much of a difference.
Stock Heatsink
---Those big tower things scare me. If there are any good small heatsinks I'll be willing to toss something on but I hear the Q6600 has a great stock heatsink.
Some Samsung $7 Floppy
---Doesn't look like I can go wrong.
Rear Exhaust
---NF-P12. I might as well give these a try. They look like pretty good fans.
Front Intake
---NF-P12.
Corsair 520HX
---I'm also considering the Antec Earthwatts 500 but I haven't really done much research between the two, so its still up in the air. Going to go to CompUSA to see if I can haggle the price down tomorrow. :laugh: I figure if they're going out of business it's worth a try. lol
Vista Home Premium (64-bit, obviously)
---Not really interested in a new computer with XP. *gasp* :laugh: I'm curious to see what Vista has to bring to the table now that I have a reason to upgrading and compatibility issues are less common.
Parts I already own:
=========================
SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS
---Causes all sorts of problems while playing audio. I don't use it now and probably won't use it later.
Linksys Wireless Adaptar
---It works and I'm using it, nothing more to say.
ASUS DRW2014L1T DVD Drive
---Have one, might get a cheaper disc drive to keep it company.
Basically, I'm looking for any hardware compatibilty problems I'll have and need a suggestion on the mb. I know a lot of compatibilty problems will stem from the motherboard itself but I'm really stuck here. I think the PSU will supply ample power for the system but confirmation will make me feel a bit better. : )
And another quick question: these are my first purchases over the internets, so, do most people find the manufacturer warranty to be enough or should I get newegg as well? I'm not really seeing the point in getting both but I do see how newegg has a tendancy to be very quick-like with what they do.
Obligatory thank you in advance. :{p
