Okay, so I'm turning 21 in 4 days (on the 21st, actually) and I want to get drunk. At least once, just to see what it's like. I plan to go to the liquor store and purchase some things the afternoon of the 21st. I plan on drinking alone, at home (I live by myself), starting around 7:00 p.m. I've cleared both the 21st and the 22nd, so it's not like I'll be having to go to work the day after or anything.

So, here's what I'm trying to decide: what should I get to drink? The only (alcoholic) things I ever drank before were wine in France (gross), and beer in Germany (slightly unpleasant), both at a glass each. Of course, I felt nothing.

Anyway, I'd like some advice. I don't want wine or beer. I'd like to try maybe scotch, whiskey, or bourbon. I'm open to other beverages like sake or vodka too though. Want to spend something around $30-50. Are there any things that are particularly bad to mix? Is there some sort of calculator I could use to figure out my limit (ie, what won't kill me or put me in a coma) just in case? Any good brands to start on?

I'm a complete newb when it comes to this stuff (never been to any parties or anything). TIA

(Oh yeah, and if you plan on criticizing me for this, go away. I've already made my decision.)

I'd strongly advise you to drink with some good friends. If something happens (pass out, allergic reaction, etc.), you definitely don't want to be drinking alone. Plus, it'll be way more fun if there are other people around.

Very strongly agreed. I'd come over, but you live in WA.

It would be much more fun with some friends.

When I go out, I usually drink whiskey and coke.

You could spend a little more and get some Crown, but I usually stick with Jack Daniels.

Is there any reason why you're not going out to a bar or something?

Oh, okay. I've got one friend who's over 21. I'm kinda afraid to have ppl around though since I worry I might make a total ass of myself or try to kiss him or something humiliating like that.

Plus my friends are kind of sadistic and I could wake up with my hands superglued together... or pubic hair on my face... or worse. Hm. Maybe I could bribe him though... buy him dinner or something.

If I were you I?d think about just getting kind of tipsy, have a few drinks and enjoy your self. There is nothing at all special about getting drunk you?ll probable just wake up in the morning in he bathroom with puke all over you and a your head will feel like it?s trying to explode. :D:beer:

Just don't drink more than 4 drinks of anything. And don't take any shots.

edit: And no matter how drunk I've gotten, I've never kissed a male friend of mine. So, I don't think you need to worry too much about that happening.

They seem kinda tacky, I'm not particularly social, I might get myself beat up, old ppl go there, too much cigarette smoke, would need a designated driver, what if I throw up, etc. I'd just rather do it at home.

Getting drunk alone is sad, like another poster said.

I guess. But I'll try to have a friend there or at least get someone to check on me occasionally.

Don't drink too much. With this being your first experience you don't want to jump right in and feel like death warmed over the next morning ("Oh God, if you make the pain go away I promise I will never drink again"). You want to ease into your alcoholism, nurture it over a period of months and years.

Have a friend or two around people you trust. They'll understand. Plus with what you said about your friends it may help you keep your drinking down to just drunk and not FUBAR, which would then hamper your road to alcoholism.

Go out! Unless you have a bunch of good friends or even one really good friend over, drinking at home is like content in a Drew Carry (sp?) show (it doesn't matter). Deal with the smoke or better yet take up smoking too! That way you will have something to do with your other hand when your are drinking, plus it makes you look cool! Or find a bar with a patio. Those old townie men at the bar have some really good stories to tell, if you listen. And they are funny to watch get drunker and drunker. hehe.

What to drink? Long Island tea will put you under with one drink and you won't even know you had alcohol. Jim Beam a Coke will make you do things to your cousin better left out of the family or in my case give the worst case of heart-burn for the entire day after. Yet I had 5, pints with and inch of ice and a splash of coke. Don't do that. Crown Royal is smooth but I don't usually mix that. My absolute favorite drink is Jose Cuarvo 1800 and sprite. Gives you muscles, courage and a touch of attitude. But if you want something that will last you a lifetime, start on Guinness. Some nights that goes down like warm milk, and in general, where they pour Guinness you are always welcome (as long as you are drinking Guinness).

Whatever you do have fun! Drinking should enhance the fun of your evening, not be the main focus. Enjoy the company and maybe meet a girl, throw some darts, even talk to an old drunk man and laugh at the stories he tells. But you'll do what you want, nothing an old man like myself who already went through it can say to change your mind. Kids these days. :)

Have fun!

And no one gave him any suggestions:

Amaretto Sour:
1/2 fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
Pour in 1 1/2 oz. quality Amaretto.
Add a splash or two of Sour Mix.
Shake thoroughly.
Pour into a large rocks glass.
Or strain to serve up in a chilled cocktail glass.
Serve garnished with an orange slice and cherry.

White Russian:
1/2 fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
Pour in 1 1/4 oz. quality Vodka.
Pour in 1 1/4 oz. quality Coffee Liqueur.
Add a splash of half and half.
Shake thoroughly.
Pour into a tumbler.
Serve with a straw.

Also, try Dos XX beer, extremely cold with a little bit of live and salt.

You wont try to kiss him, that would be pretty damn drunk and youd probably pass out first :p

ok.... dont get drunk your first time... just have a few drinks and test your limits.....

getting drunk the first time is... well... stupid. Atleast IMHO. Unless of course you want to be turned off to alcohol for a few weeks/months

Yum, White Russians are a great first-timer drink. Either that, or mix all the alcohol you've got with all the fruit juice you've got, and you'll have a great hairy buffalo! :)

If I'd still been in Yakima, I'd come on down and help out with the drinkinization. ;) Seriously, it's a good idea to have some people (preferrably friends) with you. You want to be safe, not sorry. While you won't go around kissing your friends (unless you've always wanted to), it's a given that intoxicated folks tend to act.... less than wise ;)

As for mixin' some stuff at home, you can go for any range of sweet/fruity drinks to "the hard stuff". Stay away from drinking several types of drinks. Stick to one or two. Make sure and keep yourself hydrated (e.g. force yourself to drink water before you go to sleep) and I've heard that popping a couple ibuprofen isn't the worst of ideas either.

Do you like/drink coffee at all?

You could do B-52, "chocolate cake" or other shots.

The "sours" are easy, cheap and provide a bit less of a "bite" on the things like whiskey (in a whiskey sour). Midori Sours are like candy.

Margaritas?

Yeah, coffee's good. I looked up that B-52 (plus definitions for the ingredients). Looks decent. This site I found, drinksmixer.com, is pretty useful.

Volka mixed with orange juice or grapefruit juice are a tasty way to get durnk.

To avoid getting sick:
1.Eat a balance meal about a hour before you start drinking.
2.Drink a glass of water between each alcoholic drink.
3. Eat something every hour or so while you are dirinking.
4. For your first time do not drink shots of anything.
