Request: Good "starter" anime series?

I'm completely clueless, as I've never seen anything anywhere near this genre aside from a few Miyazaki films.

Film suggestions are fine, of course, but I'd like to buy her a box set of a series so she can give it a try. I don't mean to play off any stereotypes, but she's looking for something more "Spirited Away" or "Princess Mononoke" than a "Pokemon" or "Dragonball" sort of thing.

Thanks!

Ghost in the Shell, maybe? there's two movies, and then a series as well (Standalone Complex, iirc)... i haven't seen either, but heard they were good... sci-fi though, so may not be her thing

aye..but probably too much for a noob..it'll probably scare them off...

that said, if you are going that route there is no question about it....

start them off with the limited edition dolby 5.1 widescreen edition of "akira"

it is fvking epic.....

Depended if she wants to think or not while watching it

Neo Genesis- Evangelion is great one it has some action as well very complex characters with some humor

FLCL is short and great as well you have to watch it at least two times.

Agree with 2nd post, continue with the Miyazaki films. Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind, Porcco Rosso, Laputa/Castle in the Sky, etc etc etc.

Heh, Star Wars: The Clone Wars FTW

Now, don't worry about scaring her off with anything too "complex" or "deep." I think that's part of what she wants. I mean, she likes all the cutesy/weird stuff (creatures in Spirited Away), but she's got a taste for character development and deep drama.

To sum her up, 99% of IMDb's Top 250 films are too "mainstream." She prefers something like 2046 to Wedding Crashers.

And thanks for the quick suggestions! I'm sure this list is useful to others, as well!

As far as movies go, check out Appleseed or one of the GITS movies

For series I really liked:
Samurai Champloo(a bit violent but more realistic and adult oriented than say Dragonball or Pokemon)
Bleach (leans a bit closer to dragonball so I'm not sure she'll be into that)
Cowboy Bebop (older but a classic)
Gundam Seed

Those are the ones I really really liked. She could also check out Ichigo 100% , I've only seen a few ep's but it's very girly. All in all, i would strongly suggest samurai champloo and appleseed as starter animes. Evangelion was too depressing for me to watch and i hear they ran out of movie at the end so there were a lot of "inner thought" scenes where nothing really happened. I've seen quite a few other recent series but they're all either too formulaic or the ending eps completely blew ass

Nausicaa !!!!

I can't believe if orgot the name😱

as for castle in the sky I recorded it off of TCM and can't wait to watch it😀

It depends upon what kind of anime she might enjoy. There's stuff like Bubblegum Crisis, Escaflowne, Stellvia, The Macross Saga, or perhaps one of a few others.

Elfen Lied .............jk. 😀

If she likes that epic happy joy joy stuff... and you want it in a box set go check out...Last Exile 🙂

Evangelion will make her run away from anime. 😀

Why can't cosplay people be remotely good looking. Or look even remotely close to their cartoon characters .

I've only seen maybe 2 cosplay people that I've found attractive

This looks close 😛

Trigun is also good although it's older and the animation isn't as ... crisp

One of the recent ones, Yakitate is really funny I hear. I've only watched one ep since apparently it's jsut Prince of Tennis but w/ bread
