request for help with halo

severe thunderstorms here made my pc reboot a few times.

The last time after it came up, I tried to play halo and had a bunch of garbled text and graphics on the screen.

I shut down halo, reinstalled my video driver, and it works great except I have no chat text, death messages, etc.

I uninstalled halo, reinstalled it, auto patched it, and still the same thing.

Whats the fix for this? It worked PERFECTLY before this. Now, no text at all..

I'm running ATI catalyst drivers 4.8 on a 9700 card with direct x 9.0 c.
