Hi,

Are there any articles or guides on the net for newbie overclockers like myself? I'm not looking for hardware recommendations as much as a guide to what to tweak and in what order. If we can make sticky topics for this forum, it would be real helpful for newbies like me to have a sticky posting with some links to visit rather than risk asking questions which have already been answered time and time again.

I just finished reading the article on the new 90nm AMD processors and how well they overclock but don't understand terms like "290x9" and "slight voltage increase to 2.8v" (.09 Athlon 64: Value, Speed and Overclocking) An example of my confusion is the voltage increase: do I increase the voltage or does it happen as a by-product of increasing multipliers?

Assuming I bought a Socket 939 3000+ and overclock-worthy mobo, PS, and memory, what order would I go about tweaking things? Maybe I can get some practice with my current system: XP 2000+, Gigabyte GA-7VA, ThermalTake 420 PS, OCZ cooler, Spectek memory 2.5-3-3-7CL.

Thanks for helping ... Rick:music:

290x9 means the Front Side Bus is operating at 290Mhz, and is multiplied by 9 to achieve the CPU speed. The 9 is called the multiplier. Increasing the CPU voltage is sometimes necessary because at the new overclocked speed you require more juice. You do that separately. There is a relation to increasing the FSB, but not a by product. The higher the FSB most likely the higher the voltage. The multiplier is usually something that you can't change via the bios, so the only thing you do is manipulate the FSB and CPU voltage. Then you have to consider memory speed, and deal with the relation of the memory speed to the FSB. I don't know of any guides offhand but that should at least help you start to understand the process.

Thanks Childs and PhoenixOrion. I'll bback after I've looked into those sites.

Cheers ... Rick

No, Athlon 64 is a very different beast (because of its on-die mem controller) so the use of dividers and multipliers is much more complex than on Athlon XP. Use a good guide or a utility like OCA64: Athlon 64 OC Calculator to see beforehand what to expect...
