req. advice for moving desktops across country

Should I disassemble and package the hard drives with me to carry in hand-baggage and send everything else over with some padding in checked? How do I package hard drives? I have like 6.

I could ship it by truck or something but that's the only thing i'd have to ship, not that I have much confidence in a shipping company anyway. Also I probably can't take the crt =|

Any advice appreciated. I figure many of you likely have experience.

I have done this twice in the past, using UPS and both times the system arrived in perfect condition. I did save and use the original box's and it was back when CRT's were the norm. I'm not sure how those TSA agents will re-act to you carrying six HDD's onboard a flight without allot of questions and scrutiny. I would contact UPS or Fedex and explain your concerns and see if they have a viable solution to your concerns, but leaving the HDD's safely tucked away and mounted inside your PC case may be the way to go.
