Reputable Vendors for high speed/quality laptops?

I am helping a friend get a laptop for school and I was wondering what vendors I should seriously look at. I am a big fan of AMD because they aren't about the hype...so I would like to maybe guide him toward a 64 bit laptop. I know they are uber fast, but where can I get one that is reasonably priced? He seems to still think that "buying" a laptop means going to a store, are there any stores like Compusa or Circuit city that has good deals and won't try to throw crap parts in there?

if they can afford it look at voodoo, though $3000 may be tough from them. Doe they care about warranty (ie onsite vs depot)? Doe they care about batterylife or weight? Doe they just want a powerful machine that can go from school to home easily and not realy care about portability? Answeering those quesitons will go a long way towards figuring out which machine to get and from where.

It needs to have decent battery life, like >90 minutes, he isnt' exactly a computer guru so I would say he would need onsite. I dont think weight is really a problem. I think he wants to be able to take it to classes. I dont really know, after I got my laptop (required) I realized I should have gotten a POS and spent the spare cash for a nice desktop, but he INSISTS on a laptop. He is the kinda guy who will want to play games in class...LOL he says his grand parents are paying for laptop so he says the sky is the limit, but I dont think he realizes if that were true he could hand me 5000$ and I could find somway to spend that much on a laptop.

if sky is the limit go with voodoo, build quality/support are excelent and they offer a great upgrade policy.

3k for a voodoo is doable but you may also want to look at places like pctorque, hypersonic, and velocity micro.
for under 3k you can get a centrino based laptop with a fat warranty.

I just don't understand where voodoo computers gets their prices. Their price starts higher than the alienware notebook, but with the alienware you are already FULLY loaded, wheres it only has like 512 ram and 1.5ghz dothan. It just doesnt make sense.

I don't get Alienware either, both companies overprice their systems, its most likely the queer paint jobs and design logos they slap onto the cases that does it.
