There seems to be many shady ones out there.

Which retailers should I consider?

Adorama, B&H, Amazon, all seem to be safe choices. Any others?
 
I have used all of those with no problem. Also, Abe's of Maine (really Brooklyn!) The best I've found is B&H. Once you are their customer, they send you the greatest catalog ever - permanent fixture in my bathroom. 🙂

And, you can also use Newegg or ZZZ.
 
J&R is good too.

Abe's will give you that annoying call trying to sell you filters or something for your lens. It's rather annoying, but just say no and you're good.
 
I am comfortable with B&H, KEH, Beach Camera, BuyDig, Cameta, Abes. All good experiences on my end.
 
Crutchfield is also a reputable dealer. Their prices are generally higher than other places but they offer discounts when lens/accessories are purchased with a body (for DSLRs). Customer service is also top-notch.
 
Adorama is great, been ordering from them a while now. Never had a problem..

Now, they just need to ship me the X100 I got on pre-order :]
