When I built my new replacement in april, my mini is just sitting collecting dust.

Was thinking to use it as a HTPC. Any thoughts on software? Windows 7 or OS X 10.6.8? And what software under those OS's would be good.

Well first, upgrade that bad boy to Mavericks. It's free, and runs smooth as butter on those older system.

For an HTPC software, I'd probably install either Plex or XBMC.

The only thing with those older Mac Minis is they don't have HDMI. I don't think Display Port handles audio. So if you want surround sound, you need to get a 3.5mm TOSLINK adapter.

No surround sound for me. I use a vintage receiver and old skool Advent loudspeakers. So a regular 3.5mm to the tv works great.

I want to say that it was only the first generation mini-DP couldn't carry audio, but my 2010 Air can. So OP's probably can't, but later ones are good.

How would you handle storage of media?

Install Plex and point it to the media, keep media updated with a network connected computer. Install Plex app on your portable device and you're done.

Judging by the server in your sig, I'd recommend throwing in a small SSD in the Mini. Little speed never hurt anyone.
