Republicans win tax cut (extention) for the rich

So we're keeping taxes low, like the Republicans want, and spending more, like the Democrats want.

Anyone else see the problem with this grand compromise?

And get this: Extending the Bush tax cuts, jobless benefits, and other tax cuts for two years will likely cost more than the stimulus did

They need toi drop the tax cuts AND the extended unemployment benifits. It seems to me that if people haven't found a job by now they should be getting welfare, not unemployment.

Yes, the rich get to keep their tax cut despite taking home a larger share of the nation wealth than they ever have.

So the people that are just barely scraping by on unemployment checks (which are a huge step down from the wages that they earned) should go on welfare, default on their house payments (or terminate their leases to move in with their friends/families) further depressing the housing, reducing consumer spending, throwing the banking system back into turmoil with more foreclosures, for what reason exactly?

no problem, really, as long as the chinese keep investing their money in our increasingly becoming worthless treasure notes.

nice. its a great win. coz immediately the corporations will start hiring.. so we dont have to spend that much on the unemployment benefits.. i am waiting for the unemployment to drop to like 7% by march next year.. i hope all the "give money to the rich , they will erase unemployment" will come true

Seems like a lose lose to me.

250k should die and the unemployment should not keep going on. What is it at now up to 99weeks? And that is not enough?

I was out of work after college so I moved to where work was. Me and my wife wanted to make some long term changes in our job security so again we moved to where a better long term job was.
Let alone how many unemployed are still that because the jobs they would get would pay less than unemployment. Or even the unemployment checks keep them from making hard decisions such as moving?

So in the end our income stays the same or maybe goes down a little and we spend more. YES!!! the Reagan years are back!!! That worked well right?

it is lose - lose situation.

anybody know the terms? does the tax cut extension permanent? or only for 1 year. i cant believe they would extend unemployment which is rougly $50B / year and still allow $700B in taxcuts over 10 yrs.. pathetic.

Allow the system to correct it self, losses must be realized. The illusion must end.

We need another "ask not what your country can do for you...." moment asking people if we can sustain the road we are on. Rates for everyone should go back to the reagan rates.

this isn't surprising, Republican has the support of the people now. So Dem's must capitulate to a Republican agenda on budgeting. Although this will increase debt even faster than Dem did, they don't have a choice here, majority of poll shows people believe the Rep. way is the right way. It's Rep. time now.

IF this is true (MSNBC is projecting it, not reporting it as fact) then apparently everything is unfunded. Welcome to another $700B added to the deficit-and that's just for the tax cut for the upper 2%.

Bad idea and lose lose as someone else pointed out above. Obama should stand his ground. The national GOP is like the North Koreans-give an inch and they will want a yard, the only thing they respect is strength.

wouldnt this be amazing if Obama signs the unemployment bill and Veto the taxcut extension .. 😀 .. can he do that?

Great, we are edging closer and closer to Greece and Ireland.

(FWIW, I support ending the Bush tax cuts for all income brackets)

Not really. Whether it'd be because he had made a deal he should not break, or is passed as one bill, that's not the way to do it.

He should just refuse to adopt the Republicans' position here.

If he got a compromise for a one year extension, that might be defensible, when he'll still be in office with the Senate Democratic to prevent a longer extention.

Last time I checked there were more than 6 unemployed people for each job opening. That's nationwide. That means that people can't move to where work is, because enough work doesn't exist.

The US and Greece/Ireland are two totally different situations. The easiest way to look at them is as a state within the US. Ie: Montana could go bankrupt because it doesn't control the currency, much like Greece and Ireland don't. The US federal government is not in that same situation.

So the Republicans say that they want to bring down the deficit, but certainly not at the expense of tax cuts for the very rich. Go figure.

That, and we're spending money without increasing revenue. So the deficit is going to skyrocket. Again. 😛

We could cut down the deficit in a few years with reasonable tax rates on the wealthy. This represents lost revenue that could have been used to stimulate the economy.

Republicans don't control the Senate, Obama and the rest of the Dems just act like they do.

I agree, that's why I said "controlled" and not "majority". 😛
