The Governator has called for the courts to throw out Prop 8, saying it is in Violation of the Constitution of California. That it is an improper amendment.

The republicans that voted him in, must be livid.

Also his calls for higher taxes must make them mad too.

Why would republicans be livid because of his adherence to the rule of law? I mean, the letter of the law is quite specific about how changes to the constitution are to be made and Prop 8 is in violation of that. What's there to be angry about?? ...besides a whole bunch of wasted money campaigning for both sides.

The polls pretty clearly show that it's not just Republicans, it's "social conservatives"...many of whom are apparently minorities who vote Democratic and have absolutely no sense of irony. But if I was them, I'd think about this. Arnold is by no means a liberal, and he's apparently changed his mind on the topic. If I was a social conservative (which I'm incredibly not), I'd wonder if maybe moderate folks like Arnold are on to something. It's easy to argue against gay marriage when it's gay San Francisco residents prancing about talking about it, but it's a much different thing when it's moderate straight people saying that maybe it's time gay people had the same rights as straight people.

Actually, The California Republican Party had NO OPINION on Prop H8, and did not endorse or reject it , officially speaking.

While he did endorse McCain and Bush. His policies in California have been very center.

Arnold is socially liberal - fiscally moderate. That should explain it sufficiently.

Republicans have hated Arnold since he was sworn in and then immediatly proposed "the largest tax increase" in California history, a payroll tax for healthcare. Most republicans I know were horrified by this. I liked his plan.

The issue was not by political party; it was based on prejudice, bigotry and paranonia.

Yup, and just the plain traditional indoctrination of customs, thoughtless, but not knowingly malicious dummies, assuming that what has always been should stay that way because it doesn't gore any of their oxen.

You can fool yourself into thinking Prop 8 passed because of those, but as someone who supports gay marriage I believe that Gavin Newsom's incredibly stupid statement "whether you like it or not" is the most directly responsible for this turn of events. His arrogance and self-righteousness probably set back the cause for several years.

I will agree.

The H8 groups were able to take that soundbite and make a whopping impact with it.

You apparently did not listen to the media ads or go to church in CA over the past 4 months.

One form self hate takes is to glom on to some stupendous issue like the ultimate war between good and evil. When you take the side of good or evil you suddenly have an importance. It's a great way to hide feelings of worthlessness behind. Relationships are tough for all us self haters too. We want love so bad and when we get it we push it away because we don't feel deserving. This is all part of how we bring our worst fears to pass.

And intelligence can make people better at being sick.

I don't really pay attention to the media anymore, sigh. I am atheist, and haven't gone to a church in like 8 years. (I didn't want to go either damn-it... I never wanted to go to a church, ever)

Haven't the courts already done enough damage on the issue of gay marriage? If they hadn't tried to shoehorn this in via fiat a la Roe v. Wade, voters would have probably passed it via normal democratic processes before long. Doing it through the courts simply ensures it's going to endure as a culture war issue for years to come.

No shit, I'm in California on a temp job, being a spectator, that comment flat pissed me off, and I've always been in favor of gay marriage.

My younger sister is a lesbian, and I have been married/divorced 2X's, I figure if someone else wants in on the thrill of marriage, more power to them, and I'm sure the family law lawyers need the extra work :)

When did upholding the Constitution become doing damage. People going to court are assured of one thing. Somebody won't like the decision.

These things are never supposed to be decided by courts. The public isn't ready to embrace gay marriage yet, so why doesn't the gay community spend more time and efforts to try to educate to the public about it, instead of trying to have the courts force it down on people?

Forcing people to accept gay marriage does nothing to further your cause.
