What lies about spending??

Bush's last budget asked for $3 trillion in spending.

For 2001 Obama was asking for $3.8 trillion. So after only 3 years in office Obama has increased spending by almost a third. That is a problem.

To provide for the general welfare and common defense, as the Constitution tasked it to? Why do you not want it to have the power to do so?

And when the government uses that power and harms people? You've already said people should be punished if they disobey in such circumstances.

At least they are reading it instead of wiping their ass with it like the previous group......

He is obviously referring to Bush and the previous Republican bunch who passed the Patriot Act and created the largest increase in government bureaucracy we've seen in years as well as 3 huge unfunded liabilities.

Yep, pretty sure thats what he is referring to.

Shall we compare the 2?

Please be intellectually honest in comparisons.

Like with the "New Contract With America", this cheap little stunt is for show only. More hot air, more embellishments to dress the facade with. What a complete waste of time. What an insult to use such a revered document to commit fraud.

I think it is a stunt, but it could provide an important point later on. After all, with all the noise Republicans have been making about the Constitution, it's pretty easy to remind them of that with the next 1st or 4th amendment issue that comes up.

Or hell, maybe I'll be an optimist and imagine that this is really not just a political stunt and Republicans actually mean it when they say they want to strictly follow the Constitution. If it means we get better privacy protections and no more trying to cram Christianity down everyone's throats...I'm all for it!

This for starters, not believing or using the Congressional Accounting Office figures anymore so they don't have to admit that repealing the Health Care Act will increase the deficit by 140 billion.

Seriously...liberals would be stupid to throw this opportunity away. Republicans are doing it because saying "Constitution" as many times as possible greatly appeals to their base, who are OK with selective interpretation of said document. At the same time, it costs them NOTHING with the Democrats because Democrats are just dismissing it as the pointless publicity stunt it probably is. In fact that too benefits the Republicans, since they can claim ignorance of the ACTUAL arguments Dems are making and ask why the Democrats hate reading the Constitution so much.

Seems like a far better response to take them at their word. Republicans love the Constitution and are going to make absolutely sure they aren't doing anything in the new Congress that even remotely smells like violating it. That will certainly come in handy when topics like gay marriage, security at the airport, warrantless wiretapping, etc, come up. If it turns out Republicans are on the level, so much the better. But if they're not, their very public angst about the Constitution would be pretty embarrassing for them.

I think it was a waste of time, but if they were going to read it they should have read ALL of it. The constitution shows the history of this country and all of it should have been read IMO.

Wrong. Read it again. Nowhere in the Constitution does it say it is the government's job to provide for the general welfare.

Gimmick. They could not even get a watered down bill with regard to constitutional authority out of Republican committee. By watered down I mean the actual proposed rule would not have prevented passing something that nobody could manage to find a clause in The Constitution that enabled the bill, only that a point of order be raised if the language was not present! That even Failed. Their mouth is watering at presents they can commit to their districts as much as Democrats was.

One way to find out if the repubs really mean what they say is to give them complete control of the gov't.

Oh wait.....we already tried that, and look what they did when they had it.

Contract with America......Too bad it wasn't a BINDING contract.

Wrong. Read it again. Nowhere in the Constitution does it say it is the government's job to provide for the general welfare.

It does actually say that, the general welfare is in two places in the constitution. I still don't believe it means what most believe it means though.
