The quotes below all seem to reflect an understanding of how our media operates, of the underlying reasons certain stories get more attention than others. However, they miss what I take to be the point of the OP. The media is supposed to have a "liberal bias," are they not? That at least is what we're told. The trouble that is total nonsense. The real truth is that the media's "bias" is toward whatever sells because the media is a business.
I think there's a lot of truth to that. Note I did not say the reason for Weiner getting so much more attention is because of political bias.
Rather, I pointed out the worse scandal getting less coverage - and the reason can be discussed, and I think a lot of it is the racy nature of it.
So, my point could well be 'the public and media give way too much attention to racy stories, ignoring more important stories'. Whatever the reason, we have this problem in coverage.
Edit: having said I think racy is a big part of the reason, I'm not saying there aren't others, including the right-wing 'noise machine's' ability to amplify its message very well in the media.
I've considered a separate thread on the hypocrisy of Republican leadership here.
Reportedly, not a single Republican official called for David Vitter to resign - for *actual* sex that was *criminal*.
To this day, in the last week the RNC Chairman is doing media calling for Weiner to resign - but refuses to do so for Vitter, and while Chairman with Ensign in the Senate, never called for him to resign.
