Did it? There's 300 election deniers on the ballot next week. I still say it was just a delay.
It is possible the US might still descend into despotism but had Trump won in 2020 we would already be there. I think it's undeniably true that the certainty of dictatorship is worse than a future possibility so I'm a big fan.

I think Democrats' main issue is that their activist groups are very, very electorally unhelpful. The actual politicians are smart and know what to do for the most part.

As someone pointed out Republican activist groups are better at this because they are more centrally organized. You don't have anti-abortion groups running ads bragging about how overturning Roe is just the start and they can't wait to come after contraception after they're done banning abortion because they know their positions are extremely unpopular. Democratic interest groups should take a cue.
I've gotten at least 3 separate mailers about how the R candidate is in favor of banning abortion.

David Frum's "they won't abandon conservatism, they'll abandon democracy" statement has been true for a long time, but rarely have Republicans been quite this explicit about it — and that's saying something given what Trump did.

The scary thing is that if Trump or another likely 2024 GOP presidential candidate said this, many in the existing base would lap it up. Republicans and their supports complain about supposed "communist" Democrats, but they crave a dictatorship and the end of democracy — they just want it to be their dictatorship.

I think this is being taken a little out of context.

To me he is clearly saying that once he's governor Republicans will never lose because in reality they always win but Democrats cheat so sometimes they lose.

This is of course an obvious and ridiculous lie, but that's also the excuse Republicans will use when they try to end democracy at some point in the future. It will 100% be under the guise of 'election security'.

This is crazy, and yet it is 100% normal for Republican candidates.

I am moving overseas for a few months for work. I feel like I'm getting out at just the right time

Might want to look into making that move permanent.... I would if I had an easy option to do so.

America is swirling in the bowl.

Ironically, Trump may have been dumb and corrupt enough to create a soft tyranny that was easily opposed and overthrown.
A younger, smarter politician could seal the deal FAR better than agent orange ever could.

Last weekend I travelled to another county in Wisconsin for a funeral. I was actually surprised at the number of Democrat yard signs I saw. That was Buffalo county, I live in Trempealeau county which is still solidly Republican for some reason.

I know a few farmers here that think Trump fixed the China problem and are happy receiving government assistance and associate that with the Republican party helping them.
Small world; I grew up in the northern part of Trempealeau, and my parents still live there.

Not surprised they are still mostly republican in that area. I'm trying to think of the right way to discuss this stuff with my dad and hopefully get him to see what asses some of their lawmakers are. I generally avoid political discussions with family, but things are getting so ridiculous I don't think I can avoid it anymore.
