The old thread was over 150 posts and had been running for a month, so I hope no one minds it being freshened up.

The $30 off $150 coupon is back for ALL customers (not just new) until the end of the year, which happens to match when the $50 MIR dies out from TDK. Also, there's FREE SHIPPING right now.

Follow these instructions to take advantage of this deal,

$258.95 TDK VeloCD w/50 CD-Rs click BUY
-$30 off $150 coupon (available on the right side of this page)
-$50 rebate (click here, then click Rebates located at the very top, then click Computer Hardware and Accessories, then scroll down to TDK - Save $50 on a 12x veloCD Internal ATAPI/E-IDE CD-RW Drive! 11/12-12/31/00).

(Thanks to RossMAN for setting the above up for me to C&P.)

If you don't know about this drive, check out this review.

pretty good deal, but be warned that the part # for this product might not match the rebate exactly, because this is a kit. Since a $50 rebate is no small matter, you'd probably want to get some verification that this particular item qualifies before purchasing.

and looking at the buy.com MFg. part number says "KIT" so i double the advice to make sure before you do the rebate.

DefRef - You're welcome. Thanks for creating a new thread the original thread had 152 posts and was getting a little too bloated.

Can you edit your original post to include the original thread and this awesome review (thanks to OJ).

Insomniac - I didn't buy the TDK CD-RW, I bought a Plextor 12x/10x/32x a few months ago from Onvia.com for $193.50

I wish I had waited to buy this one though but you know "woulda, coulda, shoulda".

Don't forget, when you get this drive get all of the updates for the drive and its software:

-----
Go to: http://www.tdk.com/support/velocdsup12x.html for the

Firmware (beta 1.07) update which makes this drive rip DAE at 32x!

TDK Digital Mixmaster update

-----
Go to: http://www.nero.com/en/download.htm for the

Nero 5 update (5.0.3.5)

InCD update (1.75)

Do NOT download the updates for Nero and InCD from the TDK site. They are behind the updates on the Nero site!

Updated inital thread per RossMAN's request.

I think that the KIT only refers to the Buy.com SKU, so if the burner's box has the correct UPC, then we should be OK. Someone may want to call and check on this.

If it WON'T work, we can always go with the burner without the CD-Rs for a buck less.

just got mine yesterday.
burn a full 80 minutes music cd in 7 minutes (ahh the speed)
anyway, I got question for you people that have the drive already.
I try to make a backup of my FF9 (1st disc), use copy disc (not on the fly).
everything went fine but the game won't boot on my psx.
I never failed to make even one backup using my Ricoh 6200A.
what the heck ?
btw I'm running Nero 5.0 from TDK CD, haven't upgrade yet.
help anyone ?

it's been said that some of the TDKs and Plextor cannot read hidden tracks...

it's the xxx-202 that can't, but the xxx-000 can....forgot the three letters

So can anyone confirm/deny that the KIT model with the cd pack can be used with the $50 rebate?

I'd heard that the Plextors changed their firmware or chips and couldn't do some things that it used to do.:( The TDK was supposed to still have these capabilities.

Anyone know what's up with this?

That's TLA you're looking for. I got the TLA - 204B. What's that mean?

I can confirm that the "kit" with the 50 CD-Rs is nothing more than the boxed drive kit and a tower of CDs in a separate package. The kit was created by buy.com and the rebate still applies.

Kyutip, what type of CD-R do you use to backup your FF9. The psx doesn't read some 80minutes CD-R very well. Try the 74minutes CD-R one.

Can we get a definitive ruling on the capabilties of the TDK and Plextor drives? Firmware versions, codes, manufacture dates, whatever has bearing on this. I'd hate to get a drive that can't do it all.

Someone once posted on the original TDK thread that they called up TDK and got them to mail them the $50 rebate form (so you wouldn't have to risk losing a UPC to a botched print job from the net).

What number did he call, and how did he get through? I called the default TDK customer support number, got put on hold for a couple hours (exaggeration) and gave up (this wasn't during a peak time either). Their phone customer support system doesn't seem to user friendly, but I must commend the TDK CD-RW. It came with a ton of stuff . . . including a pen to write on the CD's with, a dummyproof setup manual, and everything. Not that I even bothered looking at it, but its nice to know they would go to all that trouble to include such things in their product.

I recommend the TDK to everyone . . . even without the 50 MIR its worth it, very much so.

I'm with you Bacon.

I got my TDK CD-RW a couple of days ago. It has a manual, a video, and an illustrated installation guide. Plus it comes with 2 CD-R's (12x) and a CD-RW (10x) plus the neeto CD-R pen and the drive. I burned a couple of CD's already, trying to get a coaster, and they still came out perfect in less than 7 minutes. I love the new drive. Now I just need to get those rebates out. Just in case you didn't know, both the drive and the CD-R's have a rebate.

I called TDK at 1-800-835-8273 and had to leave a message. Later, she called me back and said to send her the UPC and a copy of the recipt. She gave me an address to mail it to. That address is completely different from the one on the rebate form. I also do not know about getting both rebates because they want to see that item on the receipt and I don't know if 'KIT 32X/12X/10X REWRITABLE EIDE VELOCD/CDR MEDIA 50-PK BUNDLE' is enough to say you bought a TDK 50 pack of CD-Rs from Buy.com.

BTW--Is anyone having trouble checking out at Buy.com?

The reason for the change in address is that the TDK HQ recently moved (12/01/200) from Port Washington, NY to Garden City, NY.

"(Note: TDK USA Corporation is moving to a new location on December 1, 2000.)"

TDK USA Corporation
901 Franklin Avenue
Garden City, NY 11530-2933
Phone: (516) 535-2600

The CSR I spoke to said send your name, address, the UPC and invoice/packing slip to the Rebate Dept at the above address. I think they want to save on posting rebate forms out :)

Hope this clears any confusion

cheers ears

I called TDK and left a message with the same info. Insomniac recommended and the rebate was in my mailbox in three days. Good service :)

jadehawk, I use normal 74 min cdr.
btw, I just use clonecd (demo) to make backup of FF9 and succesful.
so maybe it's just Nero setting that's incorrect.
can someone post the setting for psx backup process ?
also can someone explain why WinCD can read image in less than 5 minutes while Nero and CloneCD seem to take forever (never did finish reading image, I cancel it since it took too long).
maybe, again, it's the settings.
btw, I use CloneCD newest demo, WinCD 3.8 demo, and TDK's Nero 5025 version.
