Repost Nazis

Can we formalize some guidelines on the repost nazis? A bunch of people jumping into threads gleefully screeching "R!!!" contributes nothing.

I know it's probably the only sense of superiority they'll ever get, but still...

EDIT: Just added a clarification to the summary

it's too bad search cannot be fixed so that people can adequately check to see if a topic has already been posted.

Some people will not even search anyhow (not to validate the Repost Police).

I have seen threads on the same subject in P&N, OT and HD that are created within minutes of each other and all are on the same display page.

That happens a lot, but to be fair...I have seen posts within minutes of each other that had to have taken several moments to type. As such, the thread was created while a 2nd (or 3rd) was also creating a similar thread that did NOT exist when the search would have been performed.

That has happened to me on occasion. But I rarely create threads in the first place.

It lets the OP know why no one posted in his thread
wouldn't want the OP getting all down on himself, would you?

And R, btw.

But without a link in the repost reply, nobody knows where to go.

That's my only issue. Call repost all day long, but link to the original thread. If the thread cannot be found because of the craptastic search engine, then it's pointless to call repost. It serves no purpose than to say, "Hey, look at me! I remember this thread from before the Civil War!"

That seems fair, the 'R' should be a link to the original post.

How about if one claims repost and can not link to a fairly current thread, the Mods grant them a leave of absense until they find a current thread:evil:

I'd find it absolutely hilarious to see a mod comment under someone's "repost" simply saying "Oh yeah? Here's a vacation to give you some spare time to find the original thread."

It would be ideal if people reading a thead would see a "repost" and actually click on a link that went to the original thread before they posted. Unfortunately, in reality, even though a link could be provided, a dozen people would do nothing more than bump the reposted thread, simply to feed their egos by posting "repost" for the 10th time.

DrPizza, you're absolutely right. On the other hand, if something was done to discourage the bumps, the thread most likely would fall off the first page quickly, at least in P&N and OT. The other boards seem to move more slowly.

The OP would have to take some responsibility as well. It would be good, though probably unlikely, if the OP, once shown there is already an existing thread, would wipe the original post.

(Holy commas, Batman!)

I still think some published and enforced rules around calling repost would overall improve things. And the idea of vacations, even short ones, for calling repost without a link is absolutely hilarious. 🙂

I find it hard to yell 'repost' nowadays because the search is still borked.

Not really... you can search by title fine, so if anything, people should be more specific in their thread titles when posting links to articles/videos.

Although your I agree with your points, I think that there are other things that the mods need to worry about more than reposts. Reposts are so common especially in OT and other forums around the time of Hardware/software releases it'd get exhausting to try to moderate them all. I think locking/deleting troll, flame bait/war, blatant spam posts and the general immaturity around here take priority over moderating reposts. I think the regulars do a good enough job indicating whether a thread is a repost.

Ill take trolls over repost screamers and grammer nazi's anyday. At least the trolls are occassionally funny. The latter two are just plain irritating.

Moshq,
Good to see you back...or haven't you been missing? 😀😀😀

If someone calls Repost or many do(especially), then the OP can go find it himself. I don't think those calling attention to a subject already having been started is obligated to link. If they are horribly rude about it, perhhaps a vacation is in order, but to Ban/Vacation for just stating "Repost" or "R" is over the top.

But you didn't weigh in on several "Hot Deals" of that certain type.
And you'd always taken the bait before...😀😀😀
