... who sits on the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, no less.

Washington (CNN) – A U.S. congressman is attracting attention and criticism for an online video that shows him blasting evolution and the Big Bang theory as “lies from the pit of hell” in a recent speech at a church event in his home state of Georgia.

“All that stuff I was taught about evolution, embryology, the Big Bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of hell,” U.S Rep. Paul Broun said in an address last month at a banquet organized by Liberty Baptist Church in Hartwell, Georgia. “And it’s lies to try to keep me and all the folks who were taught that from understanding that they need a savior.”

Broun, a medical doctor by training, serves on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

Speaking at Liberty Baptist Church’s Sportsman’s Banquet on September 27, he said that “a lot of scientific data that I’ve found out as a scientist that actually show that this is really a young Earth.”

“I don’t believe that the Earth’s but about 9,000 years old,” Broun said in the speech, which Liberty Baptist Church posted on its website via YouTube. “I believe it was created in six days as we know them. That’s what the Bible says."

Scientists say that the Earth is roughly 4.5 billion years old and that the universe dates back 13.7 billion years.

In his speech to the church group, Broun called the Bible the “the manufacturer’s handbook. … It teaches us how to run all of public policy and everything in our society.”

“That’s the reason, as your congressman, I hold the holy Bible as being the major directions to me of how I vote in Washington, D.C., and I’ll continue to do that,” he said.

A spokeswoman for the congressman, Meredith Griffanti, said that Broun was not available for comment on Wednesday and that the video showed him “speaking off the record to a large church group about his personal beliefs regarding religious issues.”

The congressman’s remarks about science have drawn attention online, with critics taking aim at his role on the science committee.

Bill Nye, the popular science personality, told the Huffington Post in an e-mail that "Since the economic future of the United States depends on our tradition of technological innovation, Representative Broun's views are not in the national interest."

"For example, the Earth is simply not 9,000 years old," said Nye, a mechanical engineer and television personality best known for his program "Bill Nye the Science Guy." Broun "is, by any measure, unqualified to make decisions about science, space, and technology."

Talking Points Memo reported on the church video over the weekend after being tipped off by the Bridge Project, a progressive group that tracks conservative activity.

Most creationists believe in the account of the origins of the world as told in the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible.

In the creation account, God creates Adam and Eve, the world and everything in it in six days.

For Christians who read the Genesis account literally, or authoritatively as they would say, the six days in the account are literal 24-hour periods and leave no room for evolution. Young Earth creationists use this construct and biblical genealogies to determine the age of the Earth and typically come up with 6,000 to 10,000 years.

The Gallup Poll has been tracking Americans' views on creation and evolution for 30 years. In June, it released its latest findings, which showed that 46% of Americans believed in creationism, 32% believed in evolution guided by God, and 15% believed in atheistic evolution.

What a dumbass this Broun guy is.

Creationists are the stupidest people on the face of the planet. They are so ignorant that I actually hate them.

This seems familiar. Might be a repost. Might just be that there are more than one of these guys out there.

One thing I don't understand about Creationists is how comfortable they are with oversimplifying out existence.

I mean, really....look at our planet and all the things that live on it, do you REALLY think that shit just appeared in 6 days?

Everything on this planet is connected in some way or another, our existence is just too complex to be some "abracadabra" stuff.

Really? Let me clue you in on a little fact...the vast majority of the world's population is "ignorant". I don't think you have enough hate to go around.

Both sides have loons and ill-informed people. Has the Mars rover made it to the U.S. Flag, yet?

It is disturbing that this guy is on a committee for science and technology...

If you live in Zimbabwe and your parents had to choose between getting food and sending you to elementary school you at least have an excuse for being ignorant. Creationists are ignorant by choice. They're as loathsome as anti-vaccers, 9/11 conspiracy theorists and holocaust deniers.

I think you missed the point of my post. You're a lot smarter than many people, but not as smart as some. For those who are more intelligent than you and view you as ignorant is some area, are they justifed to hate you for your ignorance? In my opinion, there is no reason to hate anyone based on their ignorance...be it willful or not. There is nothing good in hatred.

Disclaimer: You are about to read an irrational incoherent rant. [/disclaimer]
Who knows who the next chosen people will be? Bibi may or may not be Jewish and if he melts down the 3rd State of Israel, then Jews will lose their ethnoreligious identity probably for all time to come. Perhaps a pro-secession group will be the world's next chosen... I'd guess the next wave of Basques for several reasons... I remember that the current (Modern vs. Paleo) wave still wants their own State and the State corrupts people because it is made of men. OTOH, I don't know and I don't think anyone with a living body on earth knows. I'll probably be dead before I figure it out.

The current earth may have gone through a macrorevolution around that time and perhaps divinity did create adam and eve and if they were created, then their descendants are going to be super natural one day and every day after that. Reason is mostly gone from this world and has been. Reason comes and goes but even the most divinely inspired people like Dr. Paul who is just one example, cannot meet with the rest of the Natural 1% to make things good for even a majority of the people for a majority of the people. No man or group can successfully revolt against men.

For a lot of these guys it's about the power of affirming it verbally.

They get a warm, fuzzy feeling by cutting away all the more complicated, scientifically-proven information which still processes in their brain as cold, unsympathetic, new, unfamiliar, etc and just bringing it back to exactly what the Bible says.

Do they actually believe it? Some do, surely, others know there are points to be scored with certain groups by affirming these things loudly.

They get this feeling that every time they concede even an inch of ground to the forces of logic, reason, scientific truth... that this will drag them all the way to complete defeat, where they are gay married and having abortions or something.

They are so terrified of a slippery slope that they get this huge buzz off just rejecting EVERYTHING that doesn't conform 100% with their old fairy tales.

I've come to think that liberals and conservatives are both awful.

I can't stand the conservative burying their head in the sand and denying science (global warming, homosexuality, evolution) in favor of old fairy tales.

I also can't stand the liberal burying their head in the sand and denying reality (crime, racial strife, the occasional necessity of violent opposition and war, the effects of a welfare society, etc)

The only people who are hitting the nail on the head are those who seek and honor the truth and logic no matter WHERE it takes them. They tend to be atheist libertarians.

Let me take a wild guess...you're a atheist libertarian. Am I right?

BTW...I agree with your post...just don't short-change those "anomalies" that have different perspectives than you. There are many, many Christians that believe in science.

Nah, atheist but not libertarian.
