Hi,

This DVD player is available at BestBuy for less than $90 and it is region free and plays all MPEG2 files, VCDs, XVCDs etc. (The menus of the XSVCDs aren't working properly but the videos play fine). It even displays jpg files as a slide show.

Main Features of Mintek DVD-2580 Player (www.mintekdigital.com)
1) Region Free (Can be changed to any region through main setup menu, no hack required).
2) Auto video system supporting NTSC and PAL
3) Plays virtually any MPEG2 file (including 3500 kbps)
4) Component output
5) Slide shows for jpg files

Definitely worth the money. They also have one by a company called Shinsonic for the same price.

That means that you can play DVD's from any region. DVD's tend to be released in different areas at different times. Most DVD players are then "locked" so that you can't play them in another region. Unlocked DVD players mean you can do it from anywhere ;)

The description on Mintek site just says that it
"Plays DVDs (Region 1)/VCD/MP3/CD/CD-R/CD-RW/Kodak Picture CD Discs"
Can the region really be changed ?

The Mintek and the Shinsonic are *not* region-free players! There has been much confusion over the "Locale" Setup Menu Preference that lets you select your location (China, Hong Kong, France, USA, etc.). It is uncertain what this menu controls, but it definately does not control the Region. :(

There are "people" on the Nerd-Out Forum working to make them Region Free though. It just has not happened yet.

I don't know if they are still on the market, but look for the Genica GN800 dvd player. Region free, macro free, mp3, karoke. I've had it for almost a year and it works great.
