There are many ways to interpret sales figures, especially when it comes to worldwide products with a wide range of features.
According to new research released by Strategy Analytics' Connected Home Devices Service, the PlayStation 3 has surpassed the Xbox 360 "to become the number two TV console worldwide by the end of 2010." The report is entitled, "Global TV Games Console Forecast: Will New Sensor Technology Revive the Demand?" and it presents the numbers as follows: the active installed base of the PS3 reached 43.4 million, which just tops the Xbox 360's 42.9 million. Unsurprisingly, the Nintendo Wii remains in the top spot, with 75.5 million active devices. Said Strategy Analytics' Digital Consumer Practice Senior Analyst Jia Wu:
"While the Kinect peripheral has given a boost to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 strategy, the console’s performance outside of the US continues to disappoint. Global demand for Sony’s PS3 has exceeded that of the Xbox 360 in each of the past two years, and we expect that to continue over the coming years."
The report further makes a prediction for the current year, saying global sales of the 360 will increase to 13.7 million, while the PS3 will expand even further to 15.7 million. The expectation is that the Wii's decline will continue, with overall sales falling to 10 million. For the record, they also predict that Nintendo will launch a successor to the Wii before the start of 2013.
The console race is in an interesting position, isn't it? In terms of overall sales, the PS3 has also surpassed the 360 in Europe.

Too little too late. I'm surprised the PSP has such a big install base, especially since so few devs have paid any attention to it. Must be all those Monster Hunter sales in Japan.

Interesting. I wonder who's "right"

worldwide_totals.png

From this thread, (NPD + Media Create, much more credible than VGChartz)
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2154639

Lifetime sales in US, Europe and Japan:
40.6 - Xbox 360
36.5 - PS3

... but that doesn't include other parts of the world. Also, given the 360's failure rate for the first few years the number of consoles that are still working could be much lower :)

Going to go with this chart because I can't read the first post with all its mixed font size, weight, style, and underlining.

That said, why do we care about this right now? They've both moved 40 million consoles +/- and are both healthy platforms. I wonder what the game attach rate is overall...I got a PS3 solely to play LBP and God of War...heh

I was initially skeptical about the PS3 due to all of the bad press it was getting regarding how much it cost Sony to make them, manufacturing issues, and how much it initially cost.

At $299 it's a great buy right now for anyone looking for a Blu Ray player. I particularly like the way it creates photo slideshows when you pop in a CD full of images.

I didn't realize how much more powerful the PS3 is compared to the Xbox 360 until I read some articles about it. The CPU in the PS3 is more powerful by several orders of magnitude, and the system memory is several times faster as well.

Huh? Few days?

I think I have 5 times as many games on my PS3 as 360, and I enjoyed infinitely times as many exclusives ;)

I was under the impression VGChartz counts consoles shipped vs sold unless someone can correct me.

Huh. I'm the exact opposite. I'll take the 360s exclusives almost any day.

I prefer the PS3 exclusives, but they're all pretty much single player. All of my MP gaming is done on the 360 and IMO it's a superior experience because of Live. Plus I like the 360 conroller MUCH more than the PS3 controller.

Also, since I can't see it, are these numbers based on consoles sold? If so that's pretty impressive. But my concern is if they're not just based on sales and based on "active console IDs" then the PS3 might be skewed a bit. There was that large influx of hackers spoofing new console IDs to get around Sony's ban threats.

Blu-ray players cost $50 sometimes now. xbox 360 without hard drive costs $150 right now at Amazon.

PS3 and xbox hard drive versions are overpriced at a retail price of $300. Retail ought to be $50 less and a great price would be $200, maybe $225 tops.

Well, then this year, you have like 1 to look forward to. Of course, it's Gears, so it's gonna be an awesome one.

I was hoping to hear about a new Halo of some sort this year, but unless an announcement is coming at E3, don't know what to think.

Seems like a slow year for MS on the hardcore gaming side, already into April and we've heard about very little that gets me excited to own a 360. PS3 has a bunch of titles coming tho, so this year may very well be Sony's year to win or lose.

I'm betting Nintendo is going to have a new console to announce at E3 this year, even if it's only a picture of a box and a few short, random gameplay videos.

It's time for that.

Sold units and even "active devices" are one thing. Let's talk about hours used; or since these are primarily gaming consoles, hours PLAYED. I'd be willing to bet the 360 blows them all out of the water.

And no, I don't have a bias. I have both PS3 and 360, I just think the press is missing the point (as usual).

The only GREAT, MIND-BLOWING exclusive Sony has is Uncharted 3. Going against Gears 3 and Forza 4.

FYI, Resistance 3, Killzone 3 and inFamous 2 are good but not GREAT exclusives.

That assumes that Gears and Forza were ever GREAT AND MIND BLOWING.

I'm WAY more excited about Infamous 2 than Uncharted 3 personally, and if you're trying to downplay Killzone 3 somehow, sorry, I can't abide.

Dunno much about Resistance 3 at this point, I wasn't impressed with R2, but everything I've heard in previews of R3 seem to make it out to be a pretty huge jump over the previous game in the series.

There's also The Last Guardian, Little Big Planet 2, Motorstorm Apocalypse, MLB 2011 The Show, SOCOM 4, Sorcery, and Twisted Metal, so there's a few.

Just because you don't think they're great exclusives doesn't mean they're not great exclusives. I'm pretty sure they are.

I'm actually pretty excited about Gears 3, as a fan of the series.

I think Forza, like Gran Turismo, is a niche product. and while I'm sure Forza 4 will be great, on a global scale GT5 has outsold Forza 2 and 3 combined.

Im curious about the game attach rate as well. Most people I know with a PS3 got it for the blu-ray player and don't even own games.

Yes. Forza is unarguably the best racing console sim this generation (at least, metacritic and gamerankings agree on that). GT5 might be better technically but it's been under development for far longer and came out a year later too. Forza 4 will set the record straight.

As for Gears... well, like it or not, it's one of the best new IP this generation alongside Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, Bioshock and Mass Effect.

I'm looking at overall grades, people's opinions and sales. And Sony's IP don't sell that much compared to Microsoft's exclusives.

Talking in terms of sales, general opinion and acclaim, only MLB and LBP would make the cut as "AAA" exclusive titles. And I have a PS3, BTW.

As for GT5 outselling Forza 3, it's expected. GT is Sony's biggest brand name... and has been on the market for 13 years. Forza is only 5-6 years old is already selling millions. And GT's sales numbers (and overall acclaim) are dwindling from iteration to the next.

I am just saying what Sony has in quantity, Microsoft has it in quality. Plus, most of the best games (Bioshock, ACs, COD, Mass Effect, etc.) this generation are multi-platform, so our discussion is pretty much useless.

EDIT: GT5 has NOT outsold Forza 2 and 3.

Forza 2 - ~4m
Forza 3 - ~5m
GT5 - ~6m

GT5 will likely be the second GT, after GT4, not to sell at least 10m units.

Was talking about the Playstation Portable, not the PS3. :p
It`s never really had the loving it deserved. Seems 2006 was the benchmark year and everything just fell apart after that.

As for the 360, Microsoft`s tendency to multiplatform everything killed my interest in it. At least once the RRoD fiasco ended. 90% of 360 games worth playing end up on PC eventually. Since I already have a capable and (relatively) current gaming rig, there`s little sense in buying another console.
