Report: New $99 4GB Xbox 360 + Kinect Bundle w/ 2 Year Commitment ($15/month)

Not confirmed yet but an interesting rumor. Will people really commit to Xbox Live service at that kind of rate to get the hardware at $99?

http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/03/tech/gaming-gadgets/xbox-kinect-bundle/index.html?hpt=hp_bn11

The total two-year cost for the subsidized bundle as described comes in at $459, compared to the $418 Microsoft currently charges for a 4GB Xbox 360 and Kinect bundle ($299) and two years of Xbox Live Gold ($59/year). Whether that extra cost would be worthwhile depends largely on the precise features Microsoft offers for the new monthly subscribers, and how comfortable consumers are with being essentially locked to their game system for a two-year period (Microsoft would reportedly mimic cell phone providers in charging an early termination fee to those who decide to drop out before the term is up).

That article doesn't mention that it also comes with a 2yr warranty which is another $50 I think normally so it is a good deal for what you get.

I won't even commit to that shovelware for $30 a year. 3 Xbox 360's dead, 2 original Xboxes dead. I have sworn off Microsoft as a hardware producer for good...

That would be really, really stupid.

When I first heard of this, I thought it would be through AT&T and was being sold like a cell phone to go with a broadband service. $15 a month for Xbox Live though? That's three times what it normally costs.

Good thing for Microsoft there's a lot of really, really stupid people out there.

Mostly ignorant parents with too much money and not enough time to research if something is worth it or not. Way to promote a good image for yourself Microsoft. Ya jackass.

I can't wait to get rid of my Windows Phone.

This takes me back. I remember when Sega did this with the Dreamcast. You got like a free system and stuff for a one or two year commitment to Seganet or whatever internet service they affiliated themselves with. I signed up and everyone called me crazy.

2 months later Sega retracted their offer and all those on it were off the hook. =D

Unlikely to happen to Microsoft though. Beware!

This seems kind of crazy for a 360 and the poor offerings on XBL right now.

But if this was a way to get the initial cost down on a nextbox, and they ramped up what you get for your XBL gold sub....might be interesting.

This is stupid, but then if you break it down $300 for the kinect bundle plus $50 for warranty (if you get it) + XBOX live, it comes out to the same price.

That aside, if you're "financing" a console purchase you should think about offing yourself.

I don't think this makes sense for this generation of Xbox but the new Xbox will probably adapt a type of system like this and might be worth it. If they up the amount of streaming media you get and the price for that by itself (or in comparison to cable, etc) is equal or more then its not a bad idea.

I'll wait for final information on the bundles available and pricing before I pass judgement.

Yeah, you gotta figure that the deal includes no hassle hardware repair/replacement/warranty for the duration of the contract. I mean, I certainly wouldn't do it at this stage of the current gen life cycle. If they do it next cycle, it's an easier entry fee as opposed paying all $418 up front.

Bump the price $5 per month and throw in Zune Pass, that would be pretty killer.

Well this makes perfect sense for MS to do considering there are actual people out there who will "rent to own" a $1000 TV that ends up costing them $4000+. People are morons.

Yeah...if they start throwing in some free games, streaming video/music, stuff like 1vs100, etc...then this starts to make a whole lot of sense. You'd need to be able to feel like you're getting something for what you're paying every month, and not just being nickled and dimed.

Yeah, but this isn't a 400% price increase over two years, it's 9% + likely free extended warranty.

Well yeah it's not as bad a deal as those rent to own things.

But I wouldn't consider the extended warranty as making this worthwhile. Extended warranties on electronics are generally worthless.

I agree that this is kind of a goofy move at this point; I'm wondering if this isn't just a way for MS to test the waters for a similar offer when the next generation Xbox launches.

They certainly aren't going to want to sell a console at a significant loss again, so this sort of deal could keep the initial cost down for consumers while keeping money coming in to Microsoft.

On top of that, the included Live access will likely lead to additional revenue streams via whatever DLC this consumer ultimately buys from Live.

Exactly what I'm hoping. It'd be great for them to offer that for the next Xbox.
