they don't have to take an island back. they simply have to sit in between as we area already doing and call the chinese bluff. its basically saying china, you make the first move that destroys the world. go ahead.. try. see how irrational you really are.

china isn't going to start the 2nd cold war for no reason. an attack or even an attempted attack will not result in nuclear war,it will just be a stale mate, and they will in return be shunned by the world. what are they going to do then?

people have puffed china up too much. think of some electronics or something of a famous reputable chinese brand you own.... oh wait.. probably nothing right? there you go. they make things cheap for other companies. they do not innovate. if push comes to shove there are millions of south americans who would gladly steal chinese jobs given the chance. things like the xbox are already successfully made in mexico. production can be moved. we have the valuable part, the innovative creative spirit would let the west survive. china would be selling their cheap widgets to who in cold war 2? certainly not north korea😛

It has taken many years for so many companies to move their manufacturing to China, it didn't happen over night and it can't happen over night. If buisnesses had to move their manufacturing to other locations it would require a great deal of money and time. Not only that, people in south america do not work for the low wages that chinese workers get paid. So in the end we would be left with a shortage of consumer products... prices would rise and it would hurt the economy. There is no way around it. The economy can deal well with slower changes but major adrupt changes are what can hurt it. Look at what happened after the 911 scare, till this day there is fallout with airlines going under.

How often does everyone look at the country of origin when you buy a product? If you haven't been checking you better start... You'll begin to realize how much power we have handed over to China in the name of profit.

of course, and ever more reason why they won't. but the point is it can be moved. it will hurt, but it can be moved. while on the other hand china is really left up a creek with no markets and no innovation and a hoard of angry unemployed communists. at todays break neck production they still have 15% unemployement😛 its just very bad for them if it slows down.... idle workers are a security risk for the illegitimate government. http://www.bizasia.com/economy_planning_/b33xw/chinese_unemployment_always.htm

A spokeswoman for China's Foreign Ministry noted that the general had said in the article he was not speaking on behalf of the government. A spokesman later said the ministry was looking into the matter.

Fired? ok.
Beaten? why? for expressing his opinion? being fired wouldn't be enough for his irresponsible action?

"As of 1998, Taiwanese companies were producing most of the world's modems, two-thirds of its motherboards, almost as large a share of monitors, and two-fifths of the worldwide supply of graphics boards, according to the Market Intelligence Center, or MIC, part of the Taiwanese government's Institute for Information Industry.

Since then, while accurate figures are not yet available, those percentages have only gone up."

That was 7 years ago, in 1998. Here's a more recent figure, from 2003:

Taiwan produces about a third of the world's chips, more than 60 percent of its laptop computers and 70 percent of the mother boards, among other things.

And here's a link from 2004:

Product Category..........Worldwide Market Share
Notebook Computers........61%
PC Monitors.....................59%
PC Motherboards..............81%

Now I backed up my claim, which was correct. I want you to back up your claim. You won't be able to, since you're incorrect. Your argument has been shot down.

PS- I used to work for a motherboard manufacturer so I am extremely familiar with the business. I worked for the largest Chinese motherboard manufacterer.

I was trying to hit home with the fact that a lot of motherboards are manufactured in China, yes the majority of them are not manufactured there but still a great number are. And it isn't just motherboards that are being manufactured in china, there are a vast variety of products that are being made there from clothes, electronics, to materials (metals and such) The problem is still how many products china manufactures and the fact that there still exists a trend towards moving manufacturing to China. Like I said in another of my posts pay attention to the country of origin of the products you buy and you start to see what I am talking about.

edit: my original post was not directed towards you as you have seem to taken offence to what I said, I didn't bother to read all 6 pages of this thread. But after reading a few of your statements you seem to over-simplify this matter as not really posing a problem for the US. Your claim that using weapons against china will solve everything is not based in reality. This is a serious situation that can't be so easily solved. A jump into some sort of "war" with the chinese would be a move that would hurt us greatly.

Yeah, I think in the future many manufacturing jobs will leave other countries and go to China. China is going about this in a pretty shady way, though. They are intentionally undervaluing their currency and have very lax environmental laws in order to draw manufacturing jobs.

In addition, they have it setup to take jobs from the US, since they undervalues their currency and locked in it with th US dollar.

You guys all do realize that the US is tied to every single damn country on this planet. We are the most diversified country in the world and as such, the decesions we make means that we always lose. If we nuke China, there will be backlash from within our rankings so great, that in the end, it's as if we nuked ourselves. This is all due to racial diversification which I oppose due to personal reasons.

Like it's been stated before... Taiwan has put a lot of money/infrastructure into China. The large chunk of the technological advancements in China are due to Taiwanese influence and capital.

Businessmen care little about things outside of the almighty dollar (NTD in Taiwan's case). Do you think American or European businessmen are any different?

The problem is manufacturing in Taiwan has peaked out. Outsourcing to China has begun. I talked to my uncle about this who has been offered dozens of positions in Shanghai. His best buddy is the CEO of Via, and there is a clear shift of manufacturing to China. The boom in Taiwan is already over. They are pouring in millions/billions into China as well.

Finally to the individual that said a buildup would be noticed? You're damn right. A buildup would be noticed. We saw the buildup in 1996. Except in 1996, China did missile tests and threatened Taiwan. In 2000, China once again massed troops. I don't think ANY US News station covered this, but I watched Taiwanese news (TVBS) and they spent hours showing you satellite imagery of Chinese air force bases and discussing the buildup and possible effect of electing Chen to office. Sure the US moved the 7th Fleet closer but not so that it sat in the strait right between Taiwan and China.

If China wanted to it could begin an airstrike anyday. How do you think the US bombed Afghanistan on such short notice. Countries can strike any day in a short period of time. Invasions take more time. We built up forces for a while before we went into Afghanistan. However, Rangers and Delta were already on the ground since the beginning. China has the power to initiate strikes on Taiwan on short notice. The US can respond in time to prevent an invasion, but it cannot respond in time to prevent damage. Missiles? If the US can lob tomahawk missiles into any country, then so can the Chinese. It's not exactly super high tech to build medium range guided missiles. If they can remain nearly undetectable like how Tomahawks do because they fly so close to the ground, then they can easily hit Taiwanese targets.

Furthermore, the US will not move to stop China that fast if it decides to invade Taiwan on a minute's notice. The US can at best exert pressure while the Chinese build up their forces. Taiwan's army is puny, and if a conflict does occur, Taiwan will be steamrolled. Sure they are US aided, but a small island against a giant country? NO WAY.

Taken from my earlier post here.

Amen to that! The beginning of the end for many great nations and empires start when the leadership and the people believe they can get away with subpar policies and resist necessary reforms. Look at Singapore. They're one of the most non-corrupt and successful societies in the world. The leaders do what's necessary for the well-being of the nation, and are not allowed to accept political contributions. They are not swayed by special interest groups, are well-educated, and do not always have to heed to the less-educated (when most of us compare ourselves to Singapore's leaders, we ARE less educated/brilliant) populace.

As for invading the US? Here's my little hypothetical, improbable, but fun scenario! It involves pitting the Chinese against the US. Many agree that the Chinese, if anybody, are the top candidate for invading the US.

I think they would have to "prime" us with strategic nuclear launches. Assuming our orbital (still in the labs) and airborne (successfully tested) anti-missile lasers are operational, we may be able to shoot down the majority of their salvo (12 ICBMs); a few may get through. During their boost phase, we have a choice to retaliate (we have the ability to detect launches). If we do, cross China off the map. Let's assume we don't retaliate, out of pure benevolence for their civilians. If our major military bases in Guam, San Diego, etc are left at least partly intact, we will begin the conventional battles. They will pit their Su-27's against our then-deployed F-22's and F-18's. They incur heavy numerical losses, while we suffer monetary losses (F-22's are about $100M each). However, the real damage comes when surface-skimming anti-ship missiles bite into whichever CVN's we have deployed or moved into the area at the time. The Pentagon reels in shock from the loss. Our P-3C's (or its successor) hunt down their approximately 70 submarines. Torpedoes fire from both sides. Ultimately, the PLA's outdated sub fleet, which has an inadequate number of advanced Kilo-class vessles, bites the dust. Our surface fleet also suffers tremendous losses, since tracking subs and avoiding torpedoes is still rather difficult. The PLA navy, however, is no longer existent. We advance into Chinese waters, backed by Japan's SDF, with the aim to bombard their coastal installations. We are greeted with more land-launched Sunfire missiles. There is almost no way to avoid them. Whatever CVNs we have left are largely wiped out. Without a sea-based platform, our fighters (assuming they took off) make emergency landings on Taiwanese soil. Taiwan is now forced to join the fray. Assuming Congress will approve the purchase, the USAF is bolstered by the TAF's F-35's. China starts lobbing its M-11's towards Taiwan's capital and its naval installations near Kaoshiung. The Taiwanese soon realized they've been duped by the US into buying the ineffective PAC-3's. Much of the Taiwanese navy is destroyed. Their 9 brand-spanking new Kidd-class diesel subs attempt a blockade along the Chinese coastline, flanked by the SDF Navy's two Aegis cruisers. The Japanese now kick themselves for not having remilitarized. The PLAAF's remaining Su-27's and their native J-series (J is for joke) wings take to the sky. However, without advanced reconnesaince aircrafts, the enemy navy avoids detection. The TAF's F-35's and SDFAF's F-15's make short work of the Flankers, notwithstanding noticeable losses. The PLA lobs all the cruise missiles it can at Taiwan, while the 2.5M+ strong army, without air-support, invade India in frustration. 2.5 men survive. The People's Daily reports a stunning victory against the Japanese dogs and the evil American imperialists. The US "accidently" fires another missile into Chinese civilian territory, this time destroying the People's Daily headquarters. Putin's approval rating skyrockets as Sukhov and the nation's shipyards make a killing on orders from what's left of the PLA. Meanwhile, then intoxicated King Charles signs a document declaring war on China while getting a blow-job from his maid. The cum blotches out a part of "China," and the UK effectively declares war on Chile. Ever so confused, the French declare war on the UK. Newly-independent Iraq, ever so eager to please the US, declares war on Iran... cross out Iraq on your map. Canada finally declares support for the US. Three Canadian troopers are flown across the Pacific. In the US... celebrating the PLA's defeat, drunken soldiers turn a key, and push a red button. A shot is fired, and WTF?!?!??!

haha, thats funny, I love how American's believe that if people do not conform to it's way of thinking that they must be commies...does that mean that Australia is communist because we are pursuing a free trade agreement with china and we do not oppose it's reoccupation of Taiwan.

I'm sorry, but this is where I have to step in. If you want to pursue a relationship with a country that has no problem consuming a nation that was formed out of a civil war 50 years ago then who are you going to look to for help when they decide to "reoccupy" Australia or whatever other little nation that doesn't have the power to stand up to them. I think all you "America should just keep to themselves" folks are right. I think the US should close it's borders to trade with all other nations, call home all it's forward deployed troops that have been lookin out for the world for far too long. You are all right; we cannot afford to look out for other countries any more. We need to concentrate on what we can do to help America and the rest of ya can all take care of yourselves. When you're all speaking Chinese, Korean, or Russian think back on that "Bully Nation" that used to try to look out for people who wanted to speak FRENCH, German, or Spanish and there mind and think how awful we were. Our mile high "Great Wall of the United States" and "Star Wars Missile Defense System" will be just fine for us. Our economy will have stabilized since we quit hemorrhaging our jobs overseas and our dependence on foreign oil finally had to be curtailed. We're not driving SUVs anymore but we can still say what we want how we want while the rest of you can quietly allow yourselves to be subjugated.

Erm, we have no way of stopping their missles. The US would probably retaliate with nuclear missles also. Nuclear winter would ensue and the only life left on earth will be cockroaches.

Excuse me, they'd first use STARWARS and if that defense system failed, then yes, the US would more than seriously consider a retalliation for more than what a nuclear missile would be worth.

Your very foolish what makes you think Starwars failed . You think the USA government is going to give out top secret info. Out government has downed UFO"S and we have studied them and the USA government still denies there existance but almost all Americans believe they have. Also all Americans know for fact Area 51 is for real . Yet US government denies its existance . You are foolish to think that China could win . If we struck first . we would win . If China struck first there would be no winner.

Rice can go fuvk herself.
F*ck "pre-emptive" attacks

This sh*t causes un-needed wars and casulties for the sake of "democracy".

Taiwan could have a nuke in the 1980s, but was forced to give up because Washington dont want anymore nuclear power.

South Korea try the same thing, but spy (working for Washington) got the "secret" plan scraped.
