Sorry for yet another hard drive thread, but I thought this was interesting.

My email to the support address, drive@us.ibm.com:

==================
Hi, I'm considering buying some of these drives but am concerned about the
recommended 333 hours/month reliability spec.  How is the error rate affected
by leaving the drives on 24/7?  Does continuous operation void the warranty?
Should I assume that because of this spec, you don't recommend these drives
for use in servers?
==================

Reply from "Carl at IBM Tech Support Center":

==================
This would mean that the first failure, under constant use, was seen at 333
hours mark.

This means that mathematically, under the same test conditions, the drive
would be able to run for about 15 days consistently without failure.

Obviously this is not set in stone, because each environment is different.
These differences in environment could raise or lover [sic] that number.
==================

So, not only do these drives appear to suck, but he didn't even answer my other questions.

Remind me never to buy IBM ;)

My computer stays on 24-7, no ifs ands or buts about it.

Why dont they just make them good enough for servers and be done with it?

is IBM the only HDD manufacture that including the recommand time usage?

I just spent some time poking around Maxtor's site, they don't list recommended usage time. Average starts/stops to failure is 25% higher than IBM's as well. Looks like the IBM drives I have now will be my last for a while.

Am I reading this right? Did IBM just basically say that they EXPECT their flagship IDE drive to FAIL after 15 days of continuous use? Oh my. Not good. Looks like they just lost the low-end-server-drive/SOHO market...

I think what they mean is 15 days of constant read/write over and over nonstop........otherwise 15 days of your computer on before the hard drive crashes is a pile of doo-doo.

No one except someone with a VERY popular web server would need their drives running for that long and at that rate. Those people own SCSI RAID arrays that cost 10's of thousands of dollars. Dont bitch because your $200 IBM can't do this :)

Never wanted a IBM HD and never will get one. I think IBM with the 333 hour per a month recommended by IBM is IBM trying to get people who want to run HDs for very long hours to buy SCSI. But hey they can always go to WD or Maxtor. The WD1200JB with 8 mb of cache is faster than any Dum IBM 120 gxp series HD and does not have a recommended 333 hours per a month. IBM just shot themselfs in the foot i think with this dum 333 hours per a month recommened limit.

sharkeeper what sizes are they and how many? Are you using them in raid 0 two of them or no? How much did each cost you and where did you get them? Also how much did the controller cost you?

Three Seagate Cheetah X15 36LP on Adaptec 29160. Two disks are 36GB and the third is 18. I boot off a 36, use the other 36 for scratch data, (NLE) and store ghost images of most o/s' for my system, temp internet files, swap file on the 18. System hauls anus and then some. For storage I have a 1000 mbps connection to a dedicated storage/application server with 1.6 TB of storage along with a tape library backing it up. :) Cost? Pretty damn expensive. I need my sh--stuff to work 100% at ANY time (my livlihood depends on it) and it's a tax deduction so the expense is rightly justified. :)

Cheers!

Sometimes I post here! :)

I work with A/V stuff. (I'm more of an audiophile than a vidiot!) I'm currently working on several projects with that deal with manipulating acoustic energy with controlled coherent light. (plasma tunnels) I also work with high resolution imagery from scanning tunnel microsopy and some other unmentionable projects. :)

Cheers!

FYI...i have heard from a reliable source that IBM will be leaving the storage business pretty soon...take it for what it's worth. I can't elaborate more than that, it may or may not be 100% true...it's jsut what i have been told

Is this the 120GXP model?

I have had my 120GXP running at 10,000RPM fine for weeks on end, actually I have never had a single fault with any IBM HDDs.

How did you get it to run at 10,000 RPM?

I've never had a problem with IBM's either.
I think 15 days to failure refer to constant reading and writing not just having it powered.

i am sure the IBM drives will die even faster if you run them at 10000 rpm. If thats possible. The 2 platter 80 gig 120 gxp series already runs at 48C in its normal speed so i am sure the IBM 120 gxp series overclocked will die very soon. They just run too hot for HDs.

That's a poor attitude. So even if IBM releases yet another world beater, but actually fully reliable, you'd refuse to buy it?
