Wow. What makes it more interesting is that the true Ark is believed to be in Axum, Ethiopia. I heard it is guarded by soldiers and civilians.
The story of the ark is long so I won't post it here, but don't believe the Ethiopian folklore of the sons of Solomon bringing it to their land. The true stroy has to do with the second Exodus, I believe. That was when the Jews escaped from Jerusalem after it was invaded (again). Some went North and East. But those with the Ark of the Covenant went south, towards Egypt. But Egypt was hostile to Israel then so they settled (first) in Elephantine (currently in the Sudan) and then eventually around and lake Tana. That is why there was a huge Jewish population in Ethiopia before Israel initiated the operation: Moses. They were called falashas (now Beit Israel).
After the (supposed) coming of Christ and Christianity, some converted to the new religion and the Ark of the Covenant was taken from the Jews and given to the new Christian majority. Every year, there is a huge procession where 23,000 replicas of the Ark are paraded through Ethiopian towns and cities.
In case you guys didn't know, Ethiopia is the oldest country in the world. The Egyptians were colonists of Ethiopia and it (Ethiopia) is knowned as the land of Cush and/or Punt in the Bible.
