ReplayTV network problem

I am trying to connect a replaytv that I just bought for my brother for graduation. He lives in a condo that has preinstalled cat5 at all of the phone outlets. He has no phone service (only cell) so I need to connect via ethernet. I figured that if I just connected a patch cable to one of the "outlets" and another patch cable to another outlet and then into the replaytv it would work. Well as you can guess that didn't work, so I am wondering if I need to use crossover cables, or if I am totally off base and this sort of cat5 hardwiring dosen't work this way? I can usually handle my own (heh) when it comes to networking but I want to ask before I spend more $$$.

Well I went and got somecrossover cable and that didn't work. I did see at the store that there was token ring cable, but it also said it was patch cable. Is this just patch cable that they are selling in a different box, or is there indeed a difference between patch and token ring cable? Thanks,

The condo's I've seen w/ pre-wired cat5 networks, much like an office, have all wiring terminated at a patch panel somewhere. I guess the main questions are, 1. does your brother have a broadband internet connection (dsl/cable)? and 2. is is properly connected to the household network?

As far as the cables go, if the house is wired properly, you would use a standard cat5 cable (not a crossover).

Yeah he's got a cable ISP running through a netgear 802.11g router w/ 4 port switch. Everything seems to be running correctly except the patch panels. I guess I'll call the condo manager and talk to him. Thanks.

If he's got the router/cable modem at/near his computer, then you'll need to connect the router to the household wiring.

So it'd be like:

Cable -> Cable Modem -> Router

Computer -> Router

Router -> Rj45 Wall jack (w/ xover cable)

If the house wiring is done correctly, that should make all of the jacks live.
