ReplayTV Activation will be dead regardless of sticker!

Not sure whether or not this is true of false. If you recently purchse a Replay TV 5500 series you have until Monday (12/22/03) to activate it, anything after that you will have to pay full price for their service regardless of what the sticker says. Don't believe me check out this link and you can decide for yourself.

it would be nice (and professional) if RTV would issue a statement on this matter, so we dont have to rely on rumors. Even though "replaytv.US" may be an auth dealer, this is still a rumor <sigh>

interesting.....this just adds more doubt to a already crazy story. More to think about...Below text taken from a post at www.fatwallet.com

This is not the official ReplayTV web site. This is someone selling upgrades and units. From that site:

Just what we needed. A topic post with some hearsay from replaytv.us. Please don't forget to provide us with any valuable information you find at replaytv.ru.

I especially like this quote.
"DO NOT FALL FOR ANY SALES PITCHES THAT SAYS "ACTIVATION INCLUDED". Buy only from reputable dealers like ourselves who will not mislead you."

Buy from the best shop to help you void your warranty by installing larger hard drives, buy now! I couldn't find anywhere on his site that says installing larger drives will void your manufacturers warranty.
Sounds reputable and offical to me.

Offical words are, they are still trying to figure how many units were sold at low price. If not too many, there is a chance DNNA will eat the lose.

if you are gonna say the officla words are something give us a fvcking link or STFU

That one at RatShack is $500. For the price, service BETTER be included. This is a luxury purchase. Only worth it if you get the $150 for 3 years!!

Be nice. Call customer service, it is 800 number.

Called REPLAYTV CSR they know nothing about this..
Said it depends on the price you tell them you paid for the unit.

As requested, the OFFICIAL word:

Look for the link on this page.

The scoop:

"IMPORTANT NEWS!

ReplayTV recently changed its pricing model to provide customers with a lower unit price and to give them two service subscription options ($12.95 monthly and $299 product lifetime). Our retail partners were asked to help implement this pricing change in a variety of ways. Unfortunately, certain retailers may not have taken the appropriate steps to change the pricing model resulting in potential confusion for customers.

The new ReplayTV 5500 units purchased at the reduced prices below require that users choose one of the two subscription options.

5504 $149.99
5508 $299.99
5516 $449.99
5532 $799.99

Customers who have purchased these units will be notified that they will need to subscribe to the ReplayTV service at one of the two prices above. Customers can avoid any interruption of service by subscribing at ReplayTV.com.

Understandably, some customers may wish to return the product due to the additional required fees, and should resolve the matter with their retailer. We sincerely apologize for any confusion."

So... even people who paid as much as $800 for their ReplayTV are STILL screwed!

Side note: Anyone know the URL of the forum where they discuss how to replace the hard drive in a ReplayTV with a larger one?

Not True! In my Experience. YMMV!
Good News / Bad News ! The Good news is that I was able to activate my RS Demo 5040 this afternoon 12/25/03 based on saying it was purchased a few weeks ago for $499.00... Activation went right thru. Bad news for myself is that I'm using a DishNet System from 1997. Series 4000 (two) and one 3000. I just spent two to three hours playing "Stump the Tech" with RePlayTV. I can't get the ReplayTV to talk to the Dish receiver. Three Techs over several hrs.The IR Blaster used to control my receivers (no Serial ports) won't work on the Series 4000 as they use UHF signals not IR except to turn on VCR's. I had to call DishNet to get that information and that in itself took three calls also. The 3000 series is suppose to work as it does respond to The IR signal.
I picked up three of these hoping for the best. Got part of the best..... as in the service for three years. Anyone out there have any experience with this or any thoughts on the matter. Or do I just have to return two of these. I haven't gotten so far as to figure out if the other two can be activated.... (one other from the Shack 5040 Demo also) the other from CC RTV5504.

Footnote: I was also informed (by a Replay Tech) that if you wanted to stream information between two of these RTV's that the 5500 series can't communicate with the 5040 Series. So, you need to stay with similar Series(FYI). Not just the 5000 series in general.:brokenheart:

APEX Thank-you for that update. That is good to know. I was a little bummed that I may not be able to have communication between the 5500 series and the 5040.

BRUCEKATZ Thanks for the linky to AVS Forum. My sodering skills are no Bueno. Just lookin' for a simple solution, if there is any. I still might just go with the DishNetwork PVR deal. I wasn't aware of any offers to upgrade receivers for an extra year except for the 510PVR deal.

There are a few tricks about IR blaster. Good and friendly people over there.

Edit,
You can modify your UHF only receiver to both UHF and IR. It does require some solidering skill. You have model 4000, you must be with Dishnetwork for a few years. Maybe it is time get a new free receiver with extra year contract. Better yet, get dishnetwork's own PVR.

Actually, I have a 5040 and 5504, and they stream fine. You cannot stream between the 5xxx series and the 4xxx series.
