I want to replace the folder icon used in explorer when a preview of files inside are displayed on the thumbnail. A picture is worth a thousand words...

I have icon packager, that's how I replaced the other icons, but I didn't see the thumbnail option in there. Anyone know how to replace it?

Im not sure if this is what you are looking for, but have you Right Clicked on the folder, then choose Properties, then switch to the Customize tab, and click the Change Icon button at the bottom?

Thanks for the reply, but the method you specify only allows you to change the icons for folders which are not in the thumbnail view. The thumbnail view is the big flat folder with 4 slots for little preview images.

The system takes the first 4 images from the subfolder and uses them, I haven't seen a way to override that. You want to set it to a specific folder icon (I presume?) and turn off the auto-create functionality?

If you put any image called folder.jpg in the folder of choice, it will make that image the single thumbnail.

Sorry I'm not doing a very good job of explaining this... I don't want to change the preview images inside the folder, I want to change the actual folder itself. Right now it's the normal beige windows theme folder. I have a black .ico one that I want to replace it with.

So you want to change the 'brown' folder icon to black, but still allow it to show the four thumbnails through..

I think thats right?

You'll need to look into hacking some windows sytem files then. You need a program called reshacker, you can open the system files and change bitmaps (which is what you want to do I think).

Im not sure which files, but explorer.exe and shell32.dll can be a start..

I recommend trying over at neowin.net forums, the people there spend their days modding windows xp.
