Replacing the HDD on the Macbook Pro

xanis

Lifer
I went a little nuts this Black Friday and over the weekend and got a bunch of stuff. My loot:

- 2GB Kingston microSD card + adapter
- USB card reader
- 4GB (2x2GB) Crucial DDR2 667 SO-DIMM RAM
- 250GB Seagate Momentus 7200RPM HDD

My total, after all rebates and discounts are accounted for, is $83.72. Not too bad, right? 😛

Anyhow, back on topic. My RAM came in the mail today, and I know that it's super easy to replace, so I'll be replacing that tonight. My HDD is coming via USPS Priority Mail, so who knows when that's going to come in, but I want to get my information and get ready now.

First of all, I need to make sure that I can save the entire contents of my current HDD. If I remember correctly, there's a way I can do it using Carbon Copy Clone and my external HDD, but I don't remember how to do it. If someone could point me towards a tutorial, or even tell me how to do it, that would be awesome.

Secondly, I need a guide on how to physically remove and replace the hard drive. I didn't see anything on the Apple site about it, but I know there are websites out there that detail how to do it... I'm just too lazy to look right now.

Any other information or things that I should be aware of? I've built and upgraded PCs before so I'm no stranger to working with computer hardware. I've just never worked on a laptop before. Thanks!

Google is your friend, but this one looks legit.

Carbon Copy Clone works well- read the documentation on their website, and it's pretty self-explanatory.

For take apart guides on Apple laptops I basically only recommend iFixit.com

Carbon Copy Cloner is incredibly easy to use, you shouldn't have any problems at all with that phase.

Thanks for the links guys. I checked out the guide on iFixit and that seems to be the most thorough and the easiest to follow. I'm really nervous about replacing the hard drive... as I understand it, damaging/tearing the ribbons for the trackpad and HDD will result in severe damage and may even render my laptop useless.

I plan to replace my hard drive in my mbp this winter. I want to upgrade to a 7200rpm 320 gig drive.

Those have come way down in price, and it is practically a no brainer when you compare it to the 5400RPM versions. The 7200s almost all have 16MB caches (which my current 5400RPM drive has and I love), perpindicular recording and of course, the high rotational speed. If I ever get around to getting a new drive for my MacBook (which may not happen if I get a new MacBook in the Spring) it will be a 7200 320.

My original plan was to get a 320GB, but for the price of them I just couldn't justify it. I would have gotten one if there had been a good deal on it, but alas, the best deal to be had on a 7200RPM laptop drive was the 250GB Seagate Momentus I just bought.

Also, just put the new RAM in my MBP. Took me all of 10 minutes and it works like a charm. 🙂

EDIT: Anyone want to buy 2GB (2x1GB) of Samsung DDR2 SO-DIMM for a MBP? 😛

Just to bring this back up. Does anyone know if a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500 gig drive will fit in my macbook pro (last release before the unibody). I've filled my disk up and need something larger.

I am 99% sure that that drive will physically fit in there.
