Replacing the hard drive in a Compaq 2500

I a noob when it comes to laptops. Will this hard drive work in a Compaq 2500?

Yes. You will need to remove the old drive in its caddy, and replace it in the caddy with the new drive, then put it in the Presario 2500.

If yourold drive is still good, you may wish to clone it to the new drive - then you can be off and running quickly with the new drive.

It should work fine as mentioned above you'll need to use the old drives caddy though

Edit: I'd suggest a 5400 or 7200 rpm drive tho 4200rpm is just to slow

You could have thermal issues if you go for a 7200RPM drive, they get a bit hotter than 5400s.

Thats a myth 7200 rpm laptop drives are cooler than most older 5400 rpm drives yes they do put out more heat than an average 4200 rpm drive but not enough to cause a problem w/ a properly designed laptop. I've replaced the hard drive in a Presario 2100 which is the same chasis as the 2500 series w/ a 7200 rpm HGST 7k60 and never had an issue

Also this would be a better buy HITACHI Travelstar 5K100 HTS541040G9AT00 (13G1582) 40GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache ATA-6 its cheaper and much faster

Hi, Most should fit, but be sure of the thickness of the drive. Thin wil always work, thicker may not fit the caddy. Luck, Jim

Thanks for all the info guys. Another noob question, when I get the drive installed all I have to do is start up the laptop and with the XP cd in the drive and format and install windows right?

As long as your laptop boots from CD you should be fine
