Replacing system HDD with SSD (on Win2k3 Server)

I just got a small SSD to replace the boot disk on my Windows Server 2003 home file server. I'm looking for faster boot times, plus better performance from the media server application that runs on the server.

What's the best way to make this transition?

1. preferably free

2. preferably without reinstalling Win2k3 Server and all applications from scratch

Create an image of the current mechanical drive, using ghost or some other software. Make an image of the "partition" not the drive.

Boot using software that can format and create a correct 1024 offset partition on the SSD.

Use software that can apply your image preserving the partition layout.

You may have to run Bootrec.exe /FixBoot to make the SSD bootable if your software does not do this for you.

Good luck with free, easy, and stable.
