Replacing RAM on a laptop

Do most laptops run 2 dimms or 4? I hear people saying that it's super cheap/easy to upgrade from 1 gb to 2 gb after you buy the actual laptop. It's not the same for 2 gb to 4 gb is it though?
 
I don't know of any laptop that has more than 2 slots, and I don't know of any laptop that has less than 2. In short, they all have 2.

If I were to buy a new laptop with less than 2GB, I'd get the smallest amount possible and buy my own $75 2 X 1GB kit, or maybe a 2 X 2GB kit if I was planning to game a lot and multi-multitask.

I f you buy a system with 1GB, it will be 2 X 512MB sticks. If you buy 512MB, it will be 1 X 512MB stick (most of the time). If you get less to start with, you're wasting less when you take it out. No matter what you buy, you'll be taking it all out to upgrade.

Unless you buy it with 512MB and add a single 1GB stick.

You get the idea.
 
I have seen a few laptops with 3 dimm slots actually. And the workstation class laptops we order here at work come with 1gb sticks, so upgrading RAM is pretty easy.

There are also laptops with built-in ram too(I believe anyways, not 100% sure though).

That's just my input.
 
It's a good idea to leave room for growth. I just got a new T-60 Thinkpad, and it has a single 2 GB SODIMM - that leaves one slot open. 🙂
 
Some laptops (ultra-portables) made previous to say a year ago have 1 slot. They may have 128MB onboard and one slot available.

Not all laptops have 2 slots.

you might want to look up if your laptop can use more than 2gb of ram. some max out at 2gb.

It can - I could have ordered it with 4 GB, but it is doing fine with 2 GB and Vista Ultimate on a 160 GB SATA drive.
