Replacing PSU Fans

Well my ballbearing went on one of the fans in my PSU and the other fan is just plain noisy. Im going to go in and replace them with 2 Panflo 12L's.

First of all will these fans fit... i know the fans are 80mm but i dont know how thick they are?

Second of all how do they plug in... 3 pin connector?

Third... will it put enough air in there?

-Kevin

they will be fine. Are you positive they are both 80mm? my antec 350 has an 92mm intake and a 80mm exhaust. You will need to splice the wires since the psu takes 2pin connectors. Its an easy job. 24cfm is plenty i would think.

True i didn't think of RMA. However i just got one of those Vantec PSU Noise Killer cushion things... it works much better than i and other people gave credit for. I mean i can still hear the PSU's fans but MUCH MUCH less noise in the case.

I dont really want to RMA however because it is an Allied 400Watt PSU. THe ones that were supposed to be good back in the day but AT found that this model was horrible. I would rather just replace the fans.

Now since i have only ventured into a PSU once in my lifetime.... What do i NOT want to touch.

-Kevin

Some people say dont touch the capacitors, some people say leave it unplugged for a few hours than dive into it. But i just unplugged it and got right to work. I've touched everything in the psu without getting shocked.

Most fans in PSUs are 80x80x25mm (3 1/8x3 1/8x1") measured across the flats. As was said above, some have 92 or 120mm fans... Most PSUs don't have fan connectors inside any more so you will likely be splicing wires. If your PSU has a thermal fan speed regulator in it, you may need to bypass (connect fan directly to 12V) it unless the replacement fan(s) is the same current/power rating.
. I usually buy normal 3-wire case fans and splice in a rheostat for manual speed control and carry the speed sensor wire on to a mobo connector so I can monitor the fan (besides the CPU fan, the PSU fan is one you don't want going out on you.
. You may need a 3-wire fan extension cable to reach an available mobo fan connector - the ones I just got from newegg are great, 99c and they have a housed male end which grips the fan connector nicely (buy 5 and they're shipped free!).

don't touch the caps as said. its dangerous. but yes, splice wires and u can always get fans that fit. unless its one of those super thin ones...since uwant a panaflo. when i was lazy i just string the wire through the air grill into the case for power. plus then i could control with fan controller. its easier to just buy a nice very quiet psu in the first place. that way u can be sure it'll never overheat. silentpcreview.com has a good list of reviews/recommendations

A PSU is a critical component and as such you should put the best possible fan in.

With that said, I HIGHLY recommend this Sanyo Denki Dual bearing fan, Its Dead silent and will last longer than the PSU will.

Even in my PC Power and Cooling top of the line PSU I upgraded the Crappy, Loud Nidec fan they use and swapped it for this fan.

I'll tell you a tip since I like you Anandtech people, ThermalFx also has Ebay sales and you can get this fan cheaper through his Ebay sales.

Most PSU's use a two pin fan header, the solution is simple, This Sanyo Denki has a 3 pin connector, Just splice the Power Supplies wires with the wires on the fan and just cut off the RPM tach wire on the fan.

Yeah, I like those SD fans. I have a 120x25 for the intake on my box and it does a fine job. Got it at bgmicro.com. I see someone on eBay has 120x38mm/3-wire SD units at a good price.
